Community support for the Mitchell Area Safehouse was celebrated Friday night at the Highland Mall in a big way.
There were plenty of reasons to celebrate after a local couple pledged a $200,000 matching donation to the Safehouse. The donors, John and LuAnn Clarke, of Mitchell, were in attendance Friday night in a show of support for the outreach and services the Safehouse provides for Mitchell and eight surrounding counties.
Safehouse Development Director Ashley Hobbs announced the donation during the VIP portion of the event. The donation will match every match through the end of 2020, up to $200,000, which could increase the impact to as much as $400,000 with other donations.
“It’s so huge for us, and all that we do. This will impact hundreds of women and children,” Hobbs said. “We’re so grateful for their support, and they are very supportive of the entire community.”
The Holiday Spirit event included a silent auction, live music, wine and cheese, and desserts. All of the proceeds will be going towards the Safehouse to help the staff provide outreach services for adults and children who are victims of domestic abuse.
“We’ve serviced about 250 women and children this year, and our services are vital for those in need,” Hobbs said. “The money raised from the event and donations received will help cover operating expenses at the Safehouse.”
