The award was instituted in the 1996-97 academic year. John and Vicki Clarke, Mitchell, endowed an award to annually recognize a Dakota Wesleyan University faculty member for excellence in teaching, serving the needs of students and service to the university and community. The award is presented to one faculty member each year at Commencement and consists of a red marble apple on a round walnut base and a cash award.
