Dancing to enrich the lives of people with developmental disabilities is exactly what Doug and Janet Greenway had in mind when they founded LifeQuest's Dancing for Dreams.
LifeQuest Executive Director Pam Hanna said the couple brought the idea forward to her staff and have been persistent in seeing it through. Given their instrumental work in creating the inaugural event, the Greenways are serving as co-chairs.
"They had the idea, they had the motivation and the energy to see it through and keep everybody motivated, so we're very thankful for them," Hanna said of the Greenways.
According to Brian Loken, developmental director at LifeQuest, the event has a format that mimics ABC's popular show Dancing with the Stars. Loken said the couple who raises the most money through the designated event website will determine the Dancing for Dreams winning couple.
The event will feature eight local celebrity couples that Greenway selected, who will compete in a dance-off at 7 p.m. Friday at the Highland Conference Center.
"People can go to our website or text the selected word of the couple who they liked most and want to donate to. The number 71777 is where people can text and donate," Loken said of the voting process.
With an already sold out crowd, Loken and Hanna feel it's a testament to the community support Mitchell gives to people with developmental disabilities and the impactful work LifeQuest accomplishes.
"LifeQuest is so thankful to live in such a gracious and generous community, and we have people that give to us all the time in many ways," Hanna said. "This is just another example of how people have been contributing to what we do here."
Proceeds of the event will go to LifeQuest's career connections program, which helps people find employment in the community. Whether it's helping people with developmental disabilities prepare for job interviews or job shadowing, Loken said the program has been influential in the community.
"I'm proud of how instrumental the program has been, and this event will only help keep it strong," Loken said, who is in the middle of his 18th year of employment.
The list of celebrity couples includes Dave and Jacki Roy, Phil and Molly Becker, Lyndon and Jana Overweg, Jimmie and Janet Nicolaus, Shannon and Michelle Klumb, Mike and Tari Gerlach, Eric and Sherri Denning and Todd and Kerri Muehler.
