A rail strike could have frozen almost 30% of U.S. cargo shipments by weight, stoked already surging inflation, cost the American economy as much as $2 billion a day, and stranded millions of rail passengers.
Watco purchased the former Mitchell-Rapid City Railroad in May 2021 and renamed it the Ringneck and Western Railroad. The line runs 108 miles from Presho to Mitchell where it connects with the BNSF Railway and primarily hauls grain, fertilizer and paper products.
Even if those votes fail, a rail shutdown that could have happened as soon as midnight Friday has been averted for several weeks due to the standard language included in such a deal.
Friday, Sept. 16, is the end of a cooling period in negotiations between railroad unions and the nation's major carriers. If no contract is reached by then, a strike halting a key artery of commerce could begin, barring congressional action.
