SIOUX FALLS (AP) -- The Sioux Falls City Council has rejected a zoning change that would have paved the way for a third Walmart store in South Dakota's largest city.
The move comes in the wake of opposition from neighbors of the proposed site. They have raised concerns ranging from increased traffic to possible water drainage problems.
The zoning change rejection does not necessarily kill plans for a third Walmart in Sioux Falls. The company could submit a new plan and seek a special permit. Walmart spokesman Ryan Irsik says the company will re-evaluate its proposal.
Several council members say they want the retailer in south Sioux Falls but they have asked Walmart to consider a different location.
