Plans are in the works for the world’s largest coffee chain to bring a standalone store to Mitchell.
According to documents submitted to the City of Mitchell Planning Commission ahead of its meeting on Monday, plans for a Starbucks store are in the works at 1321 S. Burr St., located on the site of a long-time car sales lot and south of the nearby Perkins Restaurant. A timeline for the store’s construction or opening was not provided.
Kansas-based Batis Development submitted the plans for a 2,365-foot store, with a drive-thru that wraps around the south and east sides of the planned building. Plans also include a patio area and indoor seating, with a total of 80 seats and 27 parking stalls. The Planning Commission's role is to approve or deny the building plan on the specific parcel of land.
Davison County property records indicate the land was recently sold to Batis Midstates LLC from Auto Mart Mitchell Inc. at a price of $430,000. The former B&D Automart was located on the site, which had two distinctive green carports on the property.
Mitchell already has one location with Starbucks coffee. Dakota Wesleyan University’s Tiger Cafe located in the McGovern Library has served Starbucks coffee since 2018 but the company doesn’t consider it to be a store location.
Starbucks has more than 32,000 stores around the world, including more than 15,000 in the United States. About half of them are franchise locations. In South Dakota, standalone Starbucks locations remain limited, with stores in Sioux Falls, Watertown, Aberdeen and Rapid City, while there are dozens more kiosk locations in grocery stores and on college campuses in locations such as Yankton, Brookings, Vermillion, Spearfish and Deadwood.
In June, Starbucks said it planned to accelerate the transformation of its U.S. store portfolio to accommodate physical and digital customers, emphasizing drive-thru and curbside pickup options through the company’s app.
An arrival from Starbucks would represent the latest coffee chain to move to Mitchell, joining an already competitive coffee business scene in the city. In 2018, Omaha-based Scooters Coffee continued its rapid expansion across the central part of the U.S. with a store at 321 E. Havens Ave. Caribou Coffee also added a location at 1620 S. Burr St. in 2018, making it the Minnesota-based chain’s second site in Mitchell, joining the kiosk location inside County Fair Food Store.
