PIERRE -- Northern State University intends to add minors in accounting and in international business studies to help students have broader professional skills when they enter the workforce.
The university already offers majors in both programs.
NSU President Jim Smith told the state Banking Commission during its meeting on the campus recently that, as an example, the accounting minor will be a good fit with the bachelor degree and master degree programs in banking offered by the university.
He said there is increased demand for accounting knowledge in many occupations, involving governments, non-profit organizations and small businesses
The plan calls for the accounting and international business minors to be available outside the main Aberdeen campus, too.

NSU officials are seeking approval for the moves from the state Board of Regents. Decisions are expected from the regents when they meet Thursday and Friday in Aberdeen on the NSU campus.
The concept of the proposed 18-credit accounting minor is to allow students to expand their understanding of the subject without having to complete the full 150-credit professional accountancy program, according to university officials.
Courses for both minors would be offered face-to-face for students attending Capital University Center and through videoconferencing to other locations in South Dakota, such as Huron.
The international business courses also would be available face to face for students at the University Center-West River at Rapid City.
