Rep. Dusty Johnson on Thursday was appointed as a subcommittee leader for the House Agriculture Committee.

Johnson, elected in November as South Dakota’s lone representative in the U.S. House, was named the ranking member of the subcommittee on Nutrition, Oversight and Department Operations. House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member K. Michael Conaway, R-Texas, announced ranking members of six subcommittees.

“This is an unusual honor for a freshman in Congress, and I would like to thank Ranking Member Conaway for the vote of confidence to include me in his leadership team as a Subcommittee Ranking Member,” Rep. Johnson said. “I believe Ranking Member Conaway delivered a strong farm bill for rural America, and I look forward to working as part of his team to ensure it delivers for farmers and ranchers in South Dakota and across America.”

The subcommittee on Nutrition, Oversight and Department Operations has jurisdiction over nutrition programs at the United States Department of Agriculture, as well as new oversight authority to ensure proper implementation of farm bill programs.

It is also responsible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which offers nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families and provides economic benefits to communities.

Conaway said the subcommittees “will play an instrumental role in promoting and protecting policies that are important to rural America and our country’s farm and ranch families.”

“I look forward to working with our strong team of Ranking Members who have a wide-range of knowledge and expertise in the ag industry,” he said.

Johnson, a Mitchell resident, is also serving on the House Committee on Education and Labor, it was announced Monday.
