The Family Dollar location in Mitchell is closing, but the dollar store savings won't be going away.
The store, which anchors the south end of the Palace Mall, has "store closing - everything must go" signage in its windows at the location at 1801 N. Main St. It will be replaced by a Dollar Tree store, giving Mitchell two locations.
The liquidation sale is starting to clear the stores' shelves, and employees at the store said Tuesday that the store is expected to close for good in early April, prior to a remodel to prepare for Dollar Tree to move in. Mitchell's other Dollar Tree location is at 811 E. Spruce St.
Dollar Tree Inc. has owned both Dollar Tree and Family Dollar store brands since 2014. Earlier this month, the company announced it will close nearly 400 stores in 2019 to go with more than 120 closures last year. Another 200 stores will be rebranded from Family Dollar to Dollar Tree, like the Mitchell location is.
Combined, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar had more than 14,500 stores entering 2018, with nearly 8,200 of those stores as Family Dollar locations. Other nearby towns with Family Dollar locations include Chamberlain, Fort Thompson, Parker, Tyndall, Wagner and Winner. Dell Rapids is the only South Dakota location that was on the initial closure list of about 150 stores released this week.
The changes continue what has been a rocky period for retail outlets in Mitchell and beyond. Throughout the Midwest, Shopko has been closing stores and finally announced earlier this month that all of its stores would close, including its Mitchell location. Family Dollar's next door neighbor in the Palace Mall - JCPenney - closed in 2017.
