Lewis Drug has announced it has finalized its purchase of pharmacy assets, prescription files and records from Shopko stores in six communities, including Mitchell.

The Daily Republic reported in January that Lewis Drug had won the bid to purchase Shopko’s pharmacy assets, as the retailer goes through the Chapter 11 bankruptcy process and Shopko is selling off all of its pharmacies. That acquisition was formally announced Tuesday.

Lewis Drug has two Mitchell locations, including a standalone pharmacy and store at 1507 N. Main St., along and a pharmacy in the County Fair Food Store location at 1305 W. Havens Ave.

“These transactions demonstrate our continued commitment to serving our patients in the Tri-State area.  As we celebrate our 76th year in business, I'm proud to say that pharmacy is still our cornerstone” said Mark Griffin, Lewis Drug President and CEO, in a statement.

The Mitchell Shopko store at 1900 N. Main St. is in line to remain open, along with Shopko locations in seven other South Dakota cities, including Madison and Winner. Overall, Shopko is closing 12 South Dakota locations, including both Sioux Falls stores, and Shopko Hometown stores in Chamberlain and Wagner.

Lewis Drug also purchased the pharmacy assets in Madison and Sisseton in South Dakota, Luverne and St. James in Minnesota, and Ida Grove, Iowa.

The purchase will bring Lewis Drug’s pharmacy store total to 58 locations in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa.
