RAPID CITY -- The Class B girls cross country state meet came down to two runners on Saturday at the Hart Ranch Camping Resort.
Burke’s Hallie Person narrowly edged Dakota Hills’ Madison Zirbel for the state championship in a race no other runner was within 40 seconds of them. The Burke eighth-grader finished in 19 minutes, 24.02 seconds in the snowy weather to top Zirbel by three seconds.
Meanwhile, the Kimball/White Lake girls claimed the team title, as it placed two runners in the top 20. Sidney McCord paced the WiLdKats with a time of 21:01.19 in 12th place and Taya Chelmo (21:21.41) took 20th. Autumn Baker (21:33.03) and Christine Gaulke (21:42.94) placed 27th and 31st, respectively for KWL.
Freeman Academy/Marion’s Jada Koerner (20:09.06) finished in third place, while Gregory’s Emma Thomas (20:54.07) notched 10th place. Howard’s Emma Neises (21:11.78) earned 16th place for the Tigers.
On the boys side, Warner’s Cody Larson’s time of 15:54.61 was more than 45 seconds faster than the field, while Bison picked up the team title.

Freeman Academy/Marion had a pair of top finishers, with Titus Roesler (17:17.46) leading the way in fourth place. Tavin Schroeder (18:05.72) also earned 12th place.
Canistota’s Josiah Schroeder (17:45) and Bon Homme’s Nate Hall (17:54.30) took eighth and 10th, respectively, to finish in the top 10. Wessington Springs’ A.J. Neely finished in 17th in 18:18.56.
Mitchell Christian’s top duo of Nathanael Anderberg and Max Reynen both ended their careers with top-25 placings. Anderberg (18:16.47) took 14th and Reynen (18:28.27) ended in 25th.
Chamberlain girls place two in top 20
Abby Cutler (19:16.57) helped guide Hill City to the Class A girls team title on Saturday. Cody Farland, of St. Thomas More, won on the boys side in 16:15.55, but Sioux Falls Christian claimed the team title.
Chamberlain still placed high on the individual leaderboard. The Cubs were paced by Kinsey Evans (20:06.54) in eighth place. The girls also saw Allison Hough take 15th in 20:28.22. On the boys side, Dom Santiago (17:24.31) cracked the top 10 with an eighth-place finish.
Winner Area’s Kade Watson (17:16.75) took seventh place and Ethan/Parkston’s Evan Bartlet (17:50.12) ended in 15th, as well.
Moller, Olsen guide Kernels
The Sioux Falls Lincoln boys and Sioux Falls O’Gorman girls both earned Class AA team titles, as O’Gorman’s Aleah Hardie also added an individual championship.On the boys side, Aberdeen Central’s Josh Martin notched a first-place finish.
Lucas Moller led the Mitchell boys in 61st place with a time of 18:08.36. Nate McCormick (19:27.67) and Max Hart (19:28.39) finished side-by-side in 100th and 101st, respectively.

For the girls, Kennedy Olsen (21:26.03) notched 62nd place. Adaya Plastow earned 73rd place for the Kernels in 21:40.85 and Adelyn Prunty (22:51.04) placed 97th.
