Mitchell Christian School senior awards were given Thursday.
Mitchell Christian School students participated in the Pheasants Forever's South Dakota Pollinator Habitat and Education program Thursday morning at the school. The event was originally planned to have students outside and plant wild grass at the Bluestem Game Production Area, which is south of Mitchell.
ALEXANDRIA -- Hanson High School students did a little fishing for a hands-on ecology class project Wednesday morning at Lake Hanson. As a joint project with the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks, the class netted fish in the lake, located south of Alexandria. They then collected data on what was caught. It's an ongoing project for the past 20 years, according to Hanson teacher Steve Pociask. "We do it every spring," Pociask said. "We are getting lengths, numbers and weights for each net." Five nets were placed in the lake Tuesday and sat overnight to trap fish.
ETHAN -- Preschool through fourth-grade students in Ethan spent Tuesday morning learning how to safely get to school during a bicycle safety rodeo. The event, which encourages students to walk or bicycle to school, is part of South Dakota's Safe Routes to School program, created by the U.S. Congress as part of a federal transportation bill.
Dakota Wesleyan University played Morningside College during the Great Plains Athletic Conference baseball tournament Thursday afternoon at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.

The MTI culinary program usually has a pig roast for its students at the end of the school year, but decided to change it to a community feast, said culinary instructor Jim Wagner.
David Longworth, a Korean War veteran and orthodontist in Watertown, speaks at the Korean War Veterans Association meeting Saturday at the American Legion Hall in Mitchell. Longworth, a Navy pilot, flew combat missions in Korea and was shot down off the North Korean coast. He wrote a book, “Survivor,” about his experience growing up on a Midwest farm and serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard during the Korean War.
The capsule was started as an Arbor Day project for the Mitchell schools.
