Approximately nine cattle died, but no people were injured in an early morning accident on Interstate 90. Davison County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Harr said a semi-truck hauling cattle was heading eastbound near mile marker 334 on I-90 around 3 a.m. Thursday when the truck tipped onto its side in the south ditch. The sheriff’s office identified the driver of the 2007 Kenworth as 58-year-old Rickey Dungan, of Blossom, Texas.

The drop in pheasant numbers indicated by the state Department of Game, Fish and Parks’ annual brood survey seemed to hold true over the opening weekend of pheasant season Saturday and Sunday, and hunters had to work hard to bag their birds. Most hunters said they were finding birds, but not as many as last year. “It was lower this year, but an excellent day,” said Lyle Sunderland, of Mitchell. Sunderland and a group of 14 hunters, including his two sons, Bill and Lee Sunderland, of Phoenix, Ariz., shot 28 pheasants Saturday on Sunderland’s land west of Mount Vernon.

The Fling is a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competition for students from Wessington Springs, Armour and Platte-Geddes. The students formed teams to build trebuchets and catapults, both of which were used to fling water balloons, and performed a scene from a Shakespeare play. The first year of The Fling brought 350 to 375 students to the South Park of Platte on Wednesday morning, according to Joel Bailey, superintendent of Platte-Geddes School.
