Before each match starts, the Kernels know they have a hole to dig out of. Despite having four open weight classes, the Mitchell wrestling team has a 5-4 record in dual competition this season.
The 2013-14 Eastern South Dakota Conference girls’ basketball season is quickly turning into a one-team stroll to the finish line, as Mitchell is blitzing its way by the competition. The ESD may not be as bad as the Kernels are making it look, but a regular-season test may not come from within the league for Mitchell if the first half of the season is any indication. But will the Kernels be ready come playoff time? Macy Miller came into her senior season with something to prove. After a disappointing finish last year, the 2013-14 season started with a No. 5 ranking in Class AA for the Mitchell Kernel girls’ basketball team, which was something Miller took exception to. It’s no secret what she wants out of her senior season. “The goal is to win state,” Miller said. “We want to win every game. I feel like we’ve really turned some heads so far.” Led by the play of Miller, the Kernels are 7-0 and have climbed to No. 2 in the Class AA rankings.
PARKSTON — The Parkston wrestling machine kept rolling in a 62-9 win over Wagner in a dual Thursday in Parkston. The reigning Class B state champion took seven of the 10 contested matches, as Wagner forfeited four weight classes. The match of the night came with Wagner’s David Kocer, last year’s Class B 160-pound state champion, stepping up a weight class to challenge Parkston’s Mitch Heisinger at 182 pounds. Heisinger took a narrow victory 2-1. “Both are really good wrestlers with Kocer being a returning state champion,” Parkston coach Jared Digmann said.
SIOUX FALLS — The South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame will have 17 new members with the fifth class to be inducted on March 29, it was announced Tuesday. The 1985 Mitchell boys’ basketball team which won a state title under coach Gary Munsen is being recognized as a team of excellence and is the first Kernel team to receive this honor. “The special thing about those kids was how well they played together,” Munsen said about the undefeated team. “They were so coachable and fun to be around.” The 1985 Kernels were the second straight to win a state title for Mitchell.

Preseason injuries opened the door to the starting lineup and Tate Martin kicked it in. When the season started for the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team, Martin solidified his presence as the team’s point guard with consistent play and an unselfish attitude. “It would be crazy for me to say I thought he would be where he is at today,” first-year DWU men’s coach Matt Wilber said of Martin’s play through the first half of the season. “It was one of the situations where a guy gets an opportunity and he takes advantage of it.
