SIOUX FALLS (AP) -- A dedication ceremony is planned for a mural that was painted by residents in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Sioux Falls. The artwork in Meldrum Park of the city's Whittier Middle School neighborhood was the brainchild of one of the school's social studies teachers, Lela Himmerich, who wanted to help spruce up the park and show off the area's diversity. Her students offered suggestions. More than two-dozen people worked on the concept.
PIERRE (AP) -- The South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation has received a $418,000 federal grant to help train long-term dislocated workers for high-demand occupations. State Labor Secretary Pam Roberts says the department refers people to training that will lead to jobs that pay well. Long-term dislocated workers are defined as those out of work for at least 27 weeks. The department seeks to train people for occupations where there is a high demand for workers.
SIOUX FALLS (AP) -- Investigators told jurors that a South Dakota man accused of killing his 2-year-old daughter punched the girl in the head, but his attorneys contend the child fell from a chair. Testimony began Tuesday in the trial for Mario Contreras of Waubay, who is charged with murder and other crimes in connection to the death last year of his daughter, Aleeyah Cook. Authorities allege that Brent O'Neal caused a five-vehicle chain-reaction crash on July 25, 2012, that killed 33-year-old motorcyclist Philip Sorensen.

According to a Daily Republic reporter on the scene, law enforcement authorities have captured an escapee from the Sioux Falls penitentiary in Mitchell. The state Department of Corrections was searching for a state prison inmate who walked away from Unit C, the minimum-security unit of the Jameson Annex to the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls. Inmate Davis Bull Bear was last seen at Unit C on the evening of July 30. He is a 19-year old Native American with black hair brown eyes.
ROSEBUD (AP) -- Severe thunderstorms brought hail, strong winds and heavy rain to parts of South Dakota, forcing some residents from their homes. The National Weather Service says flash flooding late Tuesday inundated roads in the Rosebud Indian Reservation area. KELO-TV reports that about 300 people were displaced from their homes, though floodwaters were receding early Wednesday. Tribal officials were still assessing damage. The weather service says the storms packed winds gusting to 70 mph, and KELO-TV says some homes were damaged.
