Based on talk in the hallways of Mitchell High School, it's safe to conclude underage drinking is an issue. According to national statistics, approximately one in four high school students has consumed alcohol in the past month. And it seems just as common here in Mitchell. In South Dakota, drinking alcohol is illegal until the age of 21. Alcohol interferes with the brain, being a detriment to cognitive thinking, decision making, coordination and, in the case of teenagers, brain development.
It is the season of sports. Basketball, gymnastics, wrestling, hockey, along with many other activities, are in full swing at Mitchell High School. Most students are in the busiest part of their year with practices, games, and their studies all in high demand. However, this does not deter many students from participating in intramural sports.
Senior year of high school brings several conflicting emotions. Everything seems simultaneously more important and more trivial. Significance lies with every event we attend: the last first day of school, the last pep rally, the last homecoming week. We take more time to reflect, to soak everything in in the moment, to ensure this time in our lives is ingrained in our memories.
