In less than five years, about 82,000 acres of high quality wildlife habitat was enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program in South Dakota. Administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency, CREP is a state-sponsored Conservation Reserve Program designed to target and address specific high priority conservation and environmental objectives. The program includes land in 23 South Dakota counties along the James River Watershed, which is approximately 8.1 million acres.

There is no question Rick Johnson is an active member of the community. The 51-year-old Johnson is a member of the Mitchell Board of Education, a member of the Knights of Columbus and helps lead a local chapter of Boy Scouts. Ryan Stahle is excited about this year's Palace City Jazz Festival. Its not just that the fifth-annual event, Tuesday at the Sherman Center on Dakota Wesleyan University's Campus, is the only high-school sponsored jazz festival in South Dakota.
Dakota Wesleyan University President Amy Novak said a new wellness center in Mitchell continues to be a top priority. How quickly a project can start, she said, is dependent on where the passions of the school's donors lie. She said the project is still in the planning stages, and "there's not firm commitments at this point."
Hands continued to fly toward the sky. Bidders were gathered around at Mitchell Christian's annual benefit auction last February, throwing thousands of dollars at one of the most coveted items -- a gavel, which the winning bidder would not even get to take home. When the bidding concluded, the sale of the gavel raised nearly $17,000. Every dollar was a donation -- through the mock purchase of the gavel -- to Mitchell Christian School.
Daryl Kilstrom took a six-week job, never knowing it would turn into a 35-year career. In September 1977, the now-executive director of Mitchell's LifeQuest took a position with Aberdeen's Adjustment Training Center filling in for an employee who was on medical leave. The short-lived job entailed working alongside people with disabilities, driving around town in what he called the RUM (reusable, used materials) truck and picking up items such as cardboard and paper.
Gov. Dennis Daugaard is showing exactly how vital he believes career and technical education will be to South Dakota's future. Wednesday, Daugaard announced 12 recipients of the Governor's Grants for Career and Technical Education, including a grant of $1,240,228 awarded to Mitchell School District. The money locally will go toward renovation of the Mitchell Career and Technical Education Academy (MCTEA) building and its programs, which prepare high school students for specific trades, crafts and careers.
Students studying agriculture at Mitchell Technical Institute will continue to benefit from a county agreement for five more years. Rick Kriese, an ag instructor at MTI, asked the Davison County Commission on Tuesday at the courthouse for a new five-year contract to allow students to continue using county-owned land for educational purposes, a program MTI calls its "land lab."
