Daryl Kilstrom took a six-week job, never knowing it would turn into a 35-year career. In September 1977, the now-executive director of Mitchell's LifeQuest took a position with Aberdeen's Adjustment Training Center filling in for an employee who was on medical leave. The short-lived job entailed working alongside people with disabilities, driving around town in what he called the RUM (reusable, used materials) truck and picking up items such as cardboard and paper.
Gov. Dennis Daugaard is showing exactly how vital he believes career and technical education will be to South Dakota's future. Wednesday, Daugaard announced 12 recipients of the Governor's Grants for Career and Technical Education, including a grant of $1,240,228 awarded to Mitchell School District. The money locally will go toward renovation of the Mitchell Career and Technical Education Academy (MCTEA) building and its programs, which prepare high school students for specific trades, crafts and careers.

Rick Kriese, an ag instructor at MTI, asked the Davison County Commission on Tuesday at the courthouse for a new five-year contract to allow students to continue using county-owned land for educational purposes, a program MTI calls its "land lab."
Sens. John Thune and Tim Johnson showed support for the new farm bill Tuesday, each voting in favor of its passage.
GREGORY — When Julie Yager crunches the numbers for heating her car wash and laundry business, the result has not been pretty. Typically, her Gregory business uses about 500 gallons of propane per month in the winter, costing about $900 to keep temperatures comfortable and equipment working. But the price quoted to her last week -- north of $5 per gallon -- would nearly triple that to $2,550 for the month. "It's running and running and it's not turning off," she said. "We have to keep heating it. We can't close up and walk away for two weeks."
