Congratulations to eighth-graders Jesse Hastings and Matthew Koch, who have qualified for the State B wrestling tournament. Hastings qualified in the 195-pound class and Koch in the 106-pound class. Tim Pranger is the wrestling coach. Good luck at state, boys. Activities for the week of Feb. 29 through March 7 are as follows: Tuesday and Friday, the boys varsity basketball regional tournament will be held. Thursday will be the championship of the girls regional varsity basketball tournament.
Senior Mikayla Weiss has completed 2,000 assists so far in her volleyball career. She was awarded a team volleyball at the last season game against Winner. Students that attended the district oral interp contest on Nov.
The Mount Vernon High School Q107 Quiz Bowl team of Emily Wieczorek, Kyle Koch, Zach Mikkonen and alternate Dustin Steinle, defeated Parkston on Oct. 27, and will now compete against Mitchell at 10:20 a.m. on Nov. 10. Activities for the week of Nov. 2-9 are as follows: Tuesday, the varsity volleyball tournament will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, the District Oral Interp Competition will be held at Dakota Wesleyan University.
Activities for the week of Oct. 26 through Nov. 2 are as follows. Monday, there was a fifth- and sixth-grade girls basketball game at 4 p.m. in Mount Vernon with Stickney-Corsica followed by the fifth- and sixth-grade boys at 5:30 p.m. There was also a junior high volleyball game at 4 p.m. at Woonsocket High School, a C game at 5:15 p.m., a JV game at 6:15 p.m. and a varsity game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, there will be the first round of football play-offs. Thursday, the fifth- and sixth-grade girls will play Mitchell Christian at 4 p.m.
Four members of the oral interp team participated in the CBH Contest held Oct. 6 at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell. They were Zach Mikkonen and Lucas Wieczorek in duet, Chloe Fisher in humorous and Katherine Beleau in serious. Beleau placed first in her division and Fisher placed sixth. Activities for the week of Oct. 12 through 19: Today, there will be a fifth and sixth grade boys and girls basketball game at 4 p.m. in Mount Vernon with Ethan. There will be a junior high football game 4:30 p.m. in Mount Vernon with Hanson at followed by the JV game at 5:30 p.m.
At the National American Legion and Auxiliary Convention on Sept. 3 in Baltimore, Md., Pound-Uhre Unit No 210 of Mount Vernon received the Award of Excellence for Community Service in the Northwestern Division. This is the first time in the history of the Auxiliary that they have received national honors. The Division includes Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. Donna Deinert, a Pound-Uhre member, was honored at the Women of the Year Luncheon, and since has been chosen as the American Legion Auxiliary Woman of the Year from South Dakota.
Activities for the week of Sept. 28-Oct. 5 are as follows: Today, there will be a junior high football game at 4:30 p.m. at Woonsocket with the JV game at 5:30 p.m. There will be a C volleyball game at 5 p.m. in Mount Vernon with Parkston, a JV game at 6:15 p.m. and a varsity game at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, there will be a Mount Vernon Community Blood drive from 1 to 6:30 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Parish Center.
Congratulations to Ashley Glanzer and Tate Deinert for being crowned the 2015 homecoming royalty. Ashley is the daughter of Joni and Chad Glanzer and Tate is the son of Dari and Terry Deinert. They were crowned by the 2014 royalty Dani Stoltz and Bobbi Beach Pattison at the homecoming ceremony on Sept. 14. The teacher's team of Mr. Sand, Mr. Denning, Mr. Schaeffer and Hetland won the Jeopardy Game Competition. Senior Mikayla Weiss and Plankinton's Makaela Karst were selected for the 2015 Power Promotions Volleyball Preview Magazine.
The following seniors have been selected as homecoming king and queen candidates by the high school student body. King: Tate Deinert, Kyle Koch, Owen London and Cole Sonne. Queen: Ashley Glanzer, Alyson Stahl, Mikayla Weiss and Emily Wieczorek. Junior marshals are Hannah Clark and Austin Graves. First-graders elected as crown bearers are Madalynn Lorang and Tanner Baker.
Although I said that last week was my last column I would like to write to commend the MVP tracksters on the fine job at the Region 5 meet held in Wagner on May 21. The MVP girls were the champions of Region 5.
