The Q107 Radio Quiz Bowl Team of Ashley Glanzer, Bobbi Beach Pattison, Cody Renken and Charlie Mahaffey placed sixth at the finals tournament in Mitchell at the Pepsi-Cola Theatre on Jan. 3. Congratulations, students. A Mount Vernon section is being planned for the Carnegie Museum in Mitchell. Donations of historical items pertaining to the city of Mount Vernon and the surrounding area are requested. There will be a special section on the history of the Mount Vernon Post Office. Retired postmaster Vicki L. Linke and retired postmaster relief Roberta Olsen are coordinating the collection.

Darcy Deinert, Mount Vernon-Plankinton volleyball coach, was selected coach of the year for Region V. She led the Titans to the Class A Volleyball Tournament for the first time since the cooperative formed three years ago, finishing fourth at state. Congratulations Darcy. Activities for the week of Jan. 5-12 are as follows: Today, there will be a wrestling tournament at McCook Central High School at 5 p.m. There will also be a JV girls basketball game at Bridgewater-Emery at 6:15 p.m., followed by a varsity game at 8 p.m. Tuesday, a double header basketball game will be held vs.

Activities starting today, until the end of the year, include: Today, there will be a junior high girls basketball game beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a JV game at 6:30 p.m. and the varsity game at 8 p.m. in Mount Vernon with Ethan. Tuesday, there will be a boys C basketball game beginning at 5 p.m. followed by the JV game at 6:30 p.m.
The Mount Vernon and Plankinton communities are proud of the MVP Titans volleyball team on their fourth place finish at the State A Volleyball Tournament held Nov. 20-22 in Watertown. Congratulations girls and coaches Darci Deinert, Raya Nagel, Delayna Paulson, Ashley Brua and Becky Klooz. Activities for the week of Dec. 1-8 include: Thursday the K-6 Winter Concert will be held at 7 p.m. in the Tom Young Community Center. Friday and Saturday the State Oral Interp Contest will be held in Huron. Saturday there will be a wrestling invitational beginning at 9:30 a.m.
The 2014 homecoming queen and king, Dani Stoltz and Bobbi Beach Pattison. They were crowned Oct. 14 by the 2013 king and queen Cody Hinker and Haley DeLancey at coronation. Dani is the daughter of Bob and Deb Stolz and Bobbi the son of Kim Beach and Rod Pattison. Masters of ceremony were Kyle Koch and Joe Johnson.
Mount Vernon Postmaster Vicki L. Linke, will retire Sept. 30 after 29 years as a United States Postal Service employee. Linke's career began after reading a newspaper ad for taking the postal clerk exam. She had planned for a teaching career after graduating from Huron College with an English journalism degree, but after taking the postal exam her career path changed. She began working as a part-time flexible clerk at the Woonsocket Post Office in February 1986. Over the next six years, Linke also worked as a loaned clerk at the Mitchell Post Office.
Mount Vernon students that were selected by audition to participate in the annual All State Chorus and Orchestra taking place on Nov. 1 in Sioux Falls are as follows: Haley Hinker, soprano; Kelsey Hanson, alto; Charlie Mahaffey, tenor; Bobby Beach-Pattison, bass. Five members of the Mount Vernon American Legion Auxiliary attended the District 6 meeting on Sept. 28 at the Mitchell Post Home. Pound Uhre Unit No. 210 of Mount Vernon received a National Citation for its community services. Roberta Olsen, president of the unit, accepted the award.
Lt. Col. Todd William Schlund has been selected as the 2014 Hero and will be inducted into the Heroes Field Courtyard at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, prior to the homecoming football game at Heroes Field in Mount Vernon. Schlund was in the Mount Vernon Class of 1981. During Schlund's career as a U.S. Marine, he participated in Operations Desert Storm, Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. He has flown more than 800 hours during combat operations in rotary and fixed wing aircraft. He was also a Helicopter Emergency Medical System Pilot for STATMedEvac.
