The 2014 homecoming queen and king, Dani Stoltz and Bobbi Beach Pattison. They were crowned Oct. 14 by the 2013 king and queen Cody Hinker and Haley DeLancey at coronation. Dani is the daughter of Bob and Deb Stolz and Bobbi the son of Kim Beach and Rod Pattison. Masters of ceremony were Kyle Koch and Joe Johnson.
Lt. Col. Todd William Schlund has been selected as the 2014 Hero and will be inducted into the Heroes Field Courtyard at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, prior to the homecoming football game at Heroes Field in Mount Vernon. Schlund was in the Mount Vernon Class of 1981. During Schlund's career as a U.S. Marine, he participated in Operations Desert Storm, Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. He has flown more than 800 hours during combat operations in rotary and fixed wing aircraft. He was also a Helicopter Emergency Medical System Pilot for STATMedEvac.
Mount Vernon students that were selected by audition to participate in the annual All State Chorus and Orchestra taking place on Nov. 1 in Sioux Falls are as follows: Haley Hinker, soprano; Kelsey Hanson, alto; Charlie Mahaffey, tenor; Bobby Beach-Pattison, bass. Five members of the Mount Vernon American Legion Auxiliary attended the District 6 meeting on Sept. 28 at the Mitchell Post Home. Pound Uhre Unit No. 210 of Mount Vernon received a National Citation for its community services. Roberta Olsen, president of the unit, accepted the award.
Mount Vernon Postmaster Vicki L. Linke, will retire Sept. 30 after 29 years as a United States Postal Service employee. Linke's career began after reading a newspaper ad for taking the postal clerk exam. She had planned for a teaching career after graduating from Huron College with an English journalism degree, but after taking the postal exam her career path changed. She began working as a part-time flexible clerk at the Woonsocket Post Office in February 1986. Over the next six years, Linke also worked as a loaned clerk at the Mitchell Post Office.
Roberta Olsen, Mount Vernon, partner of the Davison County Salon No. 80 was installed as Northwestern Division Demi Chapeau at the LaMarche Nationale in Rapid City on Sept. 13. Irene Wilson and Lila Speckels from the Davison Salon also attended the meetings along with delegates from 32 states. Speckels, Le Chapeau Nationale, Chamberlain, presided over the La Marche. Just a reminder that the Mount Vernon Community, including the three churches, is having a food drive for the tornado victims of Wessington Springs.
Once again, I'd like to welcome each of you back to the Mount Vernon column along with the new families and faculty to our school and community. A tour of the school and social will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the banquet at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and are on sale at Mount Vernon School, Cortrust Bank and Westy's.
The following students were the first-, second- and third-place winners in the annual Poppy poster contest sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Mount Vernon: Class I, grades two and three: Lilly Casillias, Christopher Mayer and Kylie Kiner; Class II, grades four and five: Emily Maltsberger, Cole Larsch and Maria Baker; Class III, grades six and seven, Lainey Gregerson, Lorna Gregerson and Emma Lammey; Class IV, grades eight and nine: Jacob Clark, Kayla Totton and Kyle Glanzer. The first place winners advanced to the state contest and will be judged at the Department Convention on June
Mount Vernon Sports Day will be on Saturday, June 7. The schedule of events is as follows: 10 to 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. to noon, girls slow pitch softball, Mount Vernon vs. Stickney. Noon to 1:30 p.m., 12U fast pitch team; Venom Green vs Venom Black. The Venom Green team consists of girls from both Mount Vernon and Mitchell. 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Rookies. 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., Minors. 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Majors. 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., JV Teeners. 6:30 p.m., Varsity Teeners. The times listed are all approximate. There will be a Bean Bag Tournament on June 14 at Wermers Lounge in Mount Vernon.
Congratulations to the Mount Vernon/Plankinton girls track team for finishing as runner-ups at the Region 5A track meet held May 22 at Tri-Valley High School.
