As the first Mitchell High School graduate to wear the Miss South Dakota crown, Tessa Dee said she wants to share her experience with the community. That's one of the reasons this year's Miss South Dakota, a 22-year-old Mitchell native, is holding a Trunk Show on Saturday at the Pepsi-Cola Theatre as a fundraiser and sneak peek at what she'll wear during the Miss America competition in September. Dee is the daughter of Benjamin Dee and Jodi Dee, both of Mitchell.

What do you get when you cross honky-tonk, bluegrass, rock 'n' roll, and maybe even a touch of pop or jazz? Dwight Yoakam. The longtime country music singer/songwriter will bring his distinctive look and sound tonight to Mitchell's Corn Palace -- a place Yoakam said he is excited to visit. "Of course I've heard of it," he said. "Never had the pleasure of being booked there." Corn Palace Director Mark Schilling said a little more than 1,700 tickets have been sold for Yoakam's concert; the capacity for shows this week is about 2,600 to 2,700 seats.
FORT THOMPSON -- The sound of drums will lead you in. Amidst the carnival rides, outgoing and incoming vehicles, food vendors and tipis dotting the landscape, members of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe and other American Indian nations gathered at the center the pow wow arbor for a weekend of celebrations, honorings and remembrance during the Aug. 16-18 pow wow in Fort Thompson. Event organizers estimated about 1,000 people attended on Saturday. "It's bigger this year," said Clark Zephier, who is on the pow wow committee for the annual event.
The stars have aligned -- music stars, that is. Ken Griffith jingled his keys as he walked briskly toward the two storage units about to be sold at a public auction. "You want the good one, or the good one first?" he asked the handful of people following him, trying to put a light and positive spin on the occasion. In just a few minutes, Griffith sold the contents of both units for $10 to Earl Waterman, of Geddes.
