Area Class B SoDak 16 preview
The Class B SoDak 16 matches are tonight, with five area teams set to play for state volleyball tournament spots on Nov. 15-17 in Sioux Falls.
Below are capsules of each match involving an area Class B team:
Warner vs. Freeman
The Freeman Flyers can end a 20-year state tournament drought today, but standing in the way is a Class B powerhouse.
No. 15 seed Freeman (22-7) plays No. 2 Warner (32-2) today in a SoDak 16 match, which starts at 7 p.m. at the Watertown Civic Arena.
Freeman's first and only state tournament berth was in 1998, while the Monarchs have a rich volleyball tradition. Warner has qualified for nine state tournaments and has won five state championships since 2009, including three trips to the finals in the last four years.
This season, Emily Miller has put down 325 kills for the Flyers. Dayna Roth has racked up 121 kills and 21 aces. Josie Fuhrmann has recorded 615 assists.
Warner has a senior trio of offensive threats in Ashley Fischbach (363 kills), Laurie Rogers (341 kills) and Sydney Leidholt (290 kills). Fischbach and Leidholt also have 323 and 306 digs, respectively, and the 6-foot Rogers has 68 blocks.
Faith vs. Bridgewater-Emery
Bridgewater-Emery is looking for its first state volleyball tourney appearance as a co-op. Emery qualified in 2001, but Bridgewater has never advanced to the state tournament.
The No. 13 Huskies (22-6) need to get past No. 4 Faith (28-1) in today's SoDak 16 match to make history happen. The match is at 7:30 p.m. today in Wall.
The Huskies are powered offensively by Sydney Hoffman (206 kills), Haley Schulz (161 kills) and Kennedee Weber (127 kills). Schulz has 56 total blocks. Sophia Potter has dished out 343 assists, while Kerrigan Schultz has 325 assists and 37 aces. Joslyn Schrank has 390 digs and Katelyn Kotas has 270 digs.
Faith is looking for its second consecutive trip to the state tournament.
Kadoka Area vs. Kimball/White Lake
Kimball/White Lake could qualify for the state tournament for the third time as a co-op today.
The No. 12 seeded WiLdKats (21-7) will play No. 5 Kadoka Area (28-4) at 7 p.m. today in Fort Pierre in a SoDak 16 qualifying match.
KWL has qualified for state tournaments in 2013 and 2014.
KWL middle hitter Kennedy Leiferman paces the offense with 339 kills and a .283 hitting percentage. She's also registered 53 aces, 48 blocks and 235 digs. Middle hitter Grace Konechne has recorded 248 kills, 42 aces, 36 blocks and 238 digs. Setter Heather Munsen has dished out 721 assists and has 1,779 for her career. She's also racked up 51 aces this season. Darby Deffenbaugh has recorded 581 digs (1,641 in her career) and has 56 aces on the year.
Alyssa Civitak leads Kadoka Area with 329 kills and Kaylee Eisenbraun is second on the team in kills (263) and digs (144). Sophomore Jade Hutchinson leads the Kougars with 494 assists and 147 digs.
Philip vs. Burke
Burke is looking for its second straight state volleyball berth today.
The No. 10 seeded Cougars (28-7) will play No. 7 Philip (26-5) at 5:30 p.m. today in a SoDak 16 match in Fort Pierre.
Outside hitter Taylee Indahl powers the Cougars with 495 kills, 378 digs, 59 aces and 26 blocks. Outside hitter Lahna Matucha has notched 362 digs, 283 kills, 73 aces and 10 blocks.
Libero Lainee Schonebaum has 468 digs, 46 aces and 16 kills. Setter Bobbi Jo Wischmann has recorded 651 assists, 218 digs, 52 aces and 39 digs.
Philip is seeking its first trip to the state tournament since winning it all in 2015.
Ethan vs. Arlington
Ethan can advance to its first state volleyball tournament today and it will have to beat a perennial Class B powerhouse to do it.
No. 8 Ethan (26-6) plays No. 9 Arlington (23-7) at 7 p.m. today in Madison in a SoDak 16 match. Ethan has never advanced to the state volleyball tournament, while the Cardinals have 19 state appearances.
The Rustlers have a pair of big hitters in Jada Plastow and Karly Gustafson. Plastow has a team-high 286 kills this season to go along with 258 digs. Gustafson, a 6-footer, has 270 kills and leads the team with 51 blocks.
Setter Jessica Bartscher has 861 assists, 241 digs and 65 aces this season, while Maddie Miiller has totaled a team-best 446 digs.
Jayna Haufschild has registered 402 kills this season for Arlington, while Hadley Carlson has 244 kills and 397 digs. Marissa Baker has dished out 687 assists and Jeryn Christensen also has 644 digs.
