Brookings to host NAIA indoor track national meet in ’19, ’20
BROOKINGS — The Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings will host the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships in 2019 and 2020, the NAIA announced Thursday. Dakota State University will be the host institution.
The 2019 event will be held Feb. 28-March 2, while March 4-7 will be the dates for the 2020 event.
In the 53-year history of the sport, South Dakota will become the second state west of Missouri to host the indoor championships. Dakota State also hosted the Division II men’s basketball tournament at the Sanford Pentagon earlier this year and will do so again in 2019.
“The NAIA looks forward to a partnership with Dakota State University to host the 2019 and 2020 Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field National Championships,” said Jim Carr, NAIA President & CEO. “I am confident that the Dakota State staff will continue to improve the championship experience for our student-athletes.”
The Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex (SJAC) is located on the campus of South Dakota State University and is one of five 300-meter indoor track facilities in intercollegiate sports. The complex was finished in 2014 and fits an eight-lane, 300-meter track and 100 yards of turf.
Currently, 153 institutions sponsor men’s indoor track and field and 162 institutions sponsor women’s indoor track and field. In order to advance to the championship, individuals must meet or exceed the qualifying standard.
Wayland Baptist (Texas) captured its most recent titles on the men’s and women’s side in 2018. About 1,150 athletes are expected each year for the event.
