Tiger baseball gets second conference sweep of week

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Big offensive fifth innings led the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team to a sweep of Briar Cliff University Thursday.

The Tigers (20-18, 6-8 GPAC) beat the Chargers 7-2 in the first game of a doubleheader and finished the sweep with an 8-1 rout.

“It was a combination of a lot of guys stepping up and having big at-bats and getting the job done when they needed to,” DWU coach Steve Gust said.

Shortstop Ben Spitznagel had the hot bat for the Tigers, going 6-for-9 with four RBIs, while center fielder Jonah Johnson had three hits and brought in two runners.

DWU recorded nine hits in the opening game and 13 hits in the second.

The Tigers also got help from their pitching staff as starters Chris Housley and Wes Snyder went deep in the games. Housley threw the opening game, giving up two runs on four hits. He struck out two and walked one in 6 2/3 innings.

Snyder got the win in the second contest, giving up one run on six hits while striking out three in eight innings of work.

“They were fantastic,” Gust said of his pitchers. “They filled the zone up, attacked the hitters and let the defense to the work. Our relievers did well, too.”

The Tigers are 4-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference this week, after sweeping Hastings College Monday and Briar Cliff Thursday.

“They were some big wins and it was a matter of us playing better baseball,” Gust said. “And we did that.”

DWU has one more conference doubleheader this week as it hosts Morningside College at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cadwell Park.
