DWU softball team earns first GPAC win

The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team earned its first Great Plains Athletic Conference victory over the weekend.

“We’re very happy with the weekend,” DWU softball head coach Ed Kieff said.

The Tigers (8-8) split a doubleheader with Doane College Saturday and swept College of St. Mary Sunday. In Saturday’s games, DWU fell 8-4 in the opener and won 6-3 in the finale.

“We made too many errors in the first game and that’s something we dealt with against Northwestern,” Kieff said. “Our pitching was good, but we just couldn’t make fundamental plays that we needed to.”

The Tigers made four errors, had five hits and gave up 11 hits in the first game and freshman Lorissa Loeppky took the loss. In the second game, DWU scored three runs in the seventh inning to earn the win. Jill Dickson earned the win, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out eight in seven innings. Hailey Unger and Lindy Snook each had two RBIs in the win.

Sunday, freshmen pitchers Krista Huber and Loeppky earned their first wins for the Tigers, who won 6-2 and 13-6. In the opener, Loeppky earned the win after throwing five innings, giving up three runs on four hits and striking out three. Huber gave up six runs on 11 hits and struck out one in the second game.

“It’s a big thing for us,” Kieff said. “We have to have those freshmen step up and it’s very important for the team and our season that they become veterans right away.”

Sunday, Danielle led offensively after going 7-for-9 with two RBIs.

The Tigers were scheduled to host the University of Jamestown today, but it was canceled and will not be rescheduled.

DWU continues Wednesday when it faces Briar Cliff in a conference doubleheader at 5 p.m. in Sioux City, Iowa.
