DWU baseball team continues to win in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. - Jared Neilan went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to help the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team earn its seventh win of the season Monday.

The Tigers (7-5) defeated the University of Winnipeg 9-4 Monday, improving its record while playing in Tucson, Ariz., to 5-1. DWU has six more games to play on the spring break trip, which extends through Saturday.

“For us to do this well this early is surprising,” DWU head coach Steve Gust said Monday, adding there are six or seven freshmen and sophomores starting in each game. “With the inexperience and youth of our team, we didn’t think it’d show this early. We’re pleased with our progress but we still have a ways to go.

“The competition increases as we move forward.”

The Tigers have been getting strong pitching performances early in the season. Monday, Kevin Hatcher got the win on the mound, giving up one run on three hits in six innings. He also had nine strikeouts. Alex Meyer relieved Hatcher, throwing three innings and giving up three runs on four hits while striking out three.

“We’ve been pretty consistent on the mound, throwing strikes and mixing speeds,” Gust said. “It just hasn’t been the starters. We’ve had some key performances from everyone.”

Outfielder Neilan’s three-hit game led the way for the Tigers, who recorded 11 hits in the game. First baseman Neil Nagle went 2-for-4 and six other Tigers recorded hits in the win.

“They’ve really been disciplined at the plate and aggressive on the bases,” said Gust, whose team recorded four stolen bases Monday.

DWU continues its spring break trip against Minot State University at 10 a.m. today.
