DWU senior Hart interning with GPAC commissioner

Dakota Wesleyan University’s Amanda Hart has always stayed busy since starting her college career.

The Alexandria native and senior guard has spent much of the last four years playing basketball, interning with the NAIA and writing for the DWU student newspaper.

Hart recently added another activity to her resume — Great Plains Athletic Conference commissioner intern.

“I am really excited. It is a great opportunity to get my foot in the door,” Hart said. “This is a lot different from some of the things I have done in the past, but I am glad to get to do things that I don’t normally do because it is a great learning experience.”

This semester, the senior is working with GPAC Commissioner Corey Westra, remotely from Mitchell.

Hart said she met Westra through DWU Athletic Director Curt Hart, her father. She said Westra asked if she would be interested in working with him and she accepted.

Her duties include writing press releases, updating the website and doing day-to-day conference operations.

On the court, Hart is averaging a team-high 11.9 points per game. She ranks 12th in NAIA’s Division II in 3-pointers made per game with three. She is also 13th in the NAIA in 3-pointers made with 51.

“This is all about managing my time,” Hart said. “The first week was cool and I really enjoyed it. It is really amazing to see how (Westra) has narrowed things down to send things out to the masses. He can do five things at one time and that is really cool.”

Hart said she would like to use the internship to help figure out what route she wants to take when she graduates. The senior is majoring in sports management and English with a journalism emphasis.

“I want to make contacts and network,” Hart said. “Everything up to this point has been trial and error, and I am really trying to figure out what I want to do and what career path.”
