Mitchell bests Post 22 in extras

RAPID CITY — The Mitchell Post 18 legion baseball team put on a hitting display and held on to win 14-13 in 10 innings against Rapid City Post 22 Friday.

Mitchell (2-0) finished with 16 hits and got a two-run single from Tyler Houwman in the top of the 10th inning in the win. Post 18 added a third run in the 10th on a fielding error.

“It’s just an overall confidence with the team,” Mitchell coach Luke Norden said. “It’s the start of a new season and a fresh mindset.”

Houwman picked up the win in relief. He pitched the final two innings for Post 18, allowing two runs on three hits. Derek Miller started the game on the mound, going five innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits and striking out three.

“We’ve done a good job the last couple of games and we haven’t been relying on just a couple of guys,” Norden said.

Houwman went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, while Dylanger Pierson went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Jed Schmidt added three hits and two RBIs and Spencer Neugebauer was 4-for-6 with two RBIs.

Post 22 finished with 15 hits and scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th to pull within one.

Mitchell plays a doubleheader on the road against Gillette, Wyo., at 2 p.m. today.
