The Mitchell boys tennis team finished off a perfect regular season in the Eastern South Dakota Conference with a pair of wins Tuesday at Hitchcock Park in Mitchell.

The Kernels (21-0, 11-0 ESD) topped Yankton 8-1 and Brandon Valley 9-0 in a triangular as the team prepares for a matchup today with Sioux Falls Lincoln, which recently suffered its first loss of the season to Sioux Falls O’Gorman.

Against the Bucks, Mitchell’s Jacob Cersosimo fell 10-8 to Luke Rockne before rebounding to beat Billy Trevillyan, of Brandon Valley, 11-10 (7-3).

“I was really happy with how Jacob bounced back from a tough loss to come back and refocus,” Mitchell coach Pat Moller said. “He showed a lot of heart and leadership.”

At No. 3 singles, Alex Hegg continued his undefeated season for the Kernels with a 10-2 win over Yankton’s Lucas Mutschelknaus and a 10-1 victory over Brandon Valley’s Greg Hauer. No. 5 Brenden Lehr and No. 6 Gray Determan are also undefeated in singles this season.

“I thought we performed really well as we head toward the ESD tournament,” Moller said.

The Kernels swept all six doubles matches against the two ESD foes, with Cersosimo and Hegg pulling out an 11-9 win over Brandon Valley’s Trevillyan and Mutschelknaus at No. 1 doubles.

Mitchell also swept the 20 junior varsity matches played against the Bucks and Lynx.

The Kernels take on Lincoln at 2 p.m. today at Hitchcock Park.

“I think there is a lot of attention from around the state on that match, but we are just focused on one match at a time,” Moller said of the matchup with the Patriots.
