Ethan adds gymnastics; Parkston board approves co-op

ETHAN — Tim Hawkins is excited about the opportunity for girls to compete in gymnastics in Ethan next school year.

On April 14 at the Ethan School Board meeting, gymnastics was approved for the 2014-15 season.

“There are some parents and kids who are excited,” said Hawkins, Ethan’s athletic director. “I’m in favor of giving our kids opportunities that they wouldn’t have had.”

A co-op between Parkston and Ethan was approved for gymnastics at Parkston’s April 14 meeting.

Stephanie Plastow, whose daughter Jada is a sixth-grader at Ethan and competes for MEGA gymnastics out of Mitchell, is glad her daughter gets the opportunity to compete in gymnastics for her school.

“We’re really excited about it,” she said. “I know there are younger girls in club gymnastics that will get this opportunity. It’s great for those young girls to compete at the high school level.”

The joint program will have to raise funds for uniforms, coaches’ pay and meet expenses, and Heather Prunty, of Parkston, said adding Ethan gymnasts will only help the program.

“We have a lot of kids who are interested in this and we’re happy about the interest,” Prunty said. “We know there are a couple of girls from Ethan who are in club gymnastics. They already have skills that will be ready to compete.”
