DWU baseball opens tourney against Mustangs

The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team will play Morningside College to open the Great Plains Athletic Conference at noon Thursday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.

The Tigers (24-22) are the fifth seed, while the Mustangs (25-23) are the fourth seed.

DWU split with Morningside April 19, winning 4-0 and falling 9-8.

DWU softball to play Hastings in GPAC tourney

The fifth-seeded Dakota Wesleyan University softball team opens Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament play against Hastings College at 2 p.m. Thursday in Hastings, Neb.

DWU finished the regular season 20-16 overall and 11-9 in the GPAC. The Tigers swept Hastings (23-20, 12-8 GPAC) during the regular season. The top seed in the tournament is Morningside.

MTI Mavericks crown three

SPEARFISH — Mitchell Technical Institute cowboys Tanner Cross, Kyle Hapney and Evan Thyberg came away with titles at the Yellow Jacket Stampede over the weekend in Spearfish.

Cross, a Woonsocket native, won the team roping event and was partnered with South Dakota State University’s Newt Bruley. Hapney won the saddle bronc, while MTI’s Jim O’Leary took third and Tucker Whitney, of Iona, finished eighth in the event.

Thyberg was crowned champion in steer wrestling, with Jason Hapney taking fifth and Blake Boysen finishing ninth.

Thyberg, who was third in the all-around, and Bree Albers also finished fourth in team roping for MTI, which took second in the team standings.

The Mavericks will compete in Hastings, Neb., this weekend.

DWU men finish seventh in GPAC

YANKTON — The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s golf team finished seventh in the Great Plains Athletic Conference after taking fifth at the fourth qualifier Monday.

Nebraska Wesleyan University finished first in the conference.

Monday, The Tigers were paced by Tyler Burr, who took fifth with a 72. Burr finished in a tied for 19th overall in the GPAC.

Honkers sweep Todd County

PLATTE — The Platte-Geddes/Dakota Christian/White Lake baseball team swept Todd County Monday.

The Honkers won the first game 12-0 and the second 20-6. Cody Steffel was the winning pitcher in the opener, giving up no runs on three hits while striking out six strikeouts in five innings. Hayden Thiry had three hits, Seth Kirsch had two hits and two RBIs and Nick Blom and Tanner VanGenderen each had two hits.

In the finale, Blom earned the win on the mound, giving up six runs on six hits while striking out nine in five innings. Kirsh had two hits with a double and five RBIs, while Blom had two hits with a triple. Coby Johnson, Nate Spawn Riley Hoffman and VanGenderen each had two hits.

The Honkers (6-2) had a total of 30 hits in the doubleheader.

Kernel girls golf team takes 10th in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS — The Kernel girls golf team took 10th at the Warrior Invitational Monday at Willow Run Golf Course in Sioux Falls.

Mitchell finished with a 401, while Sioux Falls O’Gorman won the tournament with a 331. The Knights led the field by 20 strokes, followed by Yankton with a 351. Yankton’s Becky Frick won the individual title with a 76, topping O’Gorman’s Kelsie Johnson by three strokes.

Mitchell’s top finisher was Madison VanWalleghen. She carded a 97 and tied for 30th. Macy Miller tied for 34th with a 99, Allison Miller had a 100 to tie for 37th, Blair Overweg tied for 45th with a 105 and Kylie Barington finished in 57th with a 115.

Next, the Kernels compete in the Watertown Invitational May 6.
