One dead, several injured following I-90 crash in Mitchell

Area high school basketball:SCW, Winner girls advance to state tournaments

HURON — The Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks won the Region 3B title with an victory over the De Smet Bulldogs 51-46 Friday.

Shelby Selland recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds and Myah Selland scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds. Rachel Selland added seven points in the win.

The Blackhawks had 20 rebounds and shot 54 percent from the field, while De Smet had 34 rebounds and shot 38 percent from the field.

The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Grayson Gruenhagen with 14 points and five rebounds, Kelli Aughenbaugh added 11 points and Rylie Osthuns had nine, while Maria Huntimer pulled in eight rebounds in the loss.

SCW (22-1) heads to the Class B state tournament starting Thursday in Huron, while De Smet ends its season 20-3.

Winner 83, Chamberlain 46 FORT PIERRE — The Winner Warriors defeated the Chamberlain Cubs 83-46 for the Region 6A title in high school girls’ basketball Friday.

The Warriors had six players score in double digits in the win against the Cubs. Cassidy Hanson scored 19 points and six rebounds, Kelsey Bertram had 15 points, Tawny Sherman scored 13, Kennede Mathis recorded 12 and Sara Husher had 10 points and seven rebounds for Winner.

The Warriors had 31 rebounds and shot 52 percent from the field, while the Cubs had 10 rebounds and shot 50 percent from the field.

Chamberlain’s Kennedy Wagner and Rachel Reuer both scored 14 points in the loss.

Winner (21-1) heads to the Class A state tournament starting Thursday in Spearfish, while Chamberlain ends its season 15-7.

Boys’ basketball Parker 70, Freeman 44 FREEMAN — The Parker Pheasants boys’ basketball team defeated the Freeman Flyers in the District 9B Championship game 70-44.

Parker was led in scoring by Jake Anderson with 20 points, while Eric Hunstad finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Freeman was led by Cole Paulson with 11 points in the loss. The Flyers shot 32 percent from the field and 40 percent from the free-throw line.

Parker (18-4) will meet Centerville in Region 5B Tuesday in Tea. Freeman ends its season 9-13.

Parkston 51, Mount Vernon/Plankinton 50 PARKSTON — The Parkston Trojans, the No. 1 seed in Region 5A, defeated the Mount Vernon/Plankinton Titans 51-50 in boys’ high school basketball.

Jalen Hurley led the Trojans with 20 points and four assists, while Spencer Lucas added 12 points and eight rebounds and Dillan Thuringer pulled down eight rebounds.

Parkston was 21-of-41 from the field and 6-of-12 from the free-throw line while MVP was 18-of-52 from the field and 8-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Deric Denning scored 21 points for MVP, while Tate Deinert tallied 10 points, pulled in six rebounds and had four assists. Nick Lawson added seven rebounds in the loss .

Parkston (14-7) will play in the semifinals of Region 5A against Tri Valley Tuesday in Salem. Mount Vernon/Plankinton ends its season 10-12.

White River 86, Lyman 30 MURDO — The Lyman boys’ basketball team fell to No. 1 seed White River 86-30 in the District 13B championship Friday.

Lyman was 11-of-39 from the field and 7-of-17 from the free throw line. Alec Terca had eight points and seven rebounds for the Raiders, while Trey Mundlien added six points.

White River was led by Tavis Burbank, who had 18 points, while the team was 31-of-63 from the field and 20-of-30 from the free-throw line.

Lyman ends its season 8-15, while White River (18-4) plays Oelrichs in the Region 7B tournament

Gregory 57, Marty Indian 52 The Gregory Gorillas defeated the Marty Indian Braves 57-52 in the District 12B championship game in boys’ basketball action Friday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

The Gorillas had three players in double digits with Gavin Thomas leading with 12 points, Robert Vomacka with 11 and Andrew Taggart scoring 10. Cody Kafka pulled in five rebounds and had six assists.

The Gorillas had 24 rebounds, 28 turnovers and shot 54 percent from the field and 60 percent from the free-throw line.

Xiomar Zephier scored 20 points and pulled in seven rebounds to lead the Braves.

Gregory (17-5) advances to the Region 6B championship game Tuesday night at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. Marty Indian ends its season with a 16-6 record.
