Athlete of the week: Bultsma helps MVP to 2-1 in final week of regular season

When a spectator watches the Mount Vernon/Plankinton girls’ basketball team take the floor, Megan Bultsma stands out.

The 6-foot-3 center makes her presence known under the basket for the Titans and has helped her team to a 15-5 record this season.

With Bultsma’s help, the Titans went 2-1 in the final week of the regular season, only falling by two points to the Hanson Beavers in the first game of the week.

Bultsma scored a game-high 17 points in the Titans’ 42-40 defeat to Hanson Feb. 17. The sophomore had a game-high 10 rebounds as MVP topped Bon Homme in a Region 5A victory Feb. 18.

In the Titans’ final win of the week over Parkston on Thursday, Bultsma scored 15 points and added nine rebounds and four steals.

For her efforts, Bultsma has been named The Daily Republic’s athlete of the week, an award voted on by the newspaper’s sports staff.

MVP is giving up an average of 35 points per game and head coach Bill Marquardt said, “She’s the main part of that.”

Bultsma leads the Titans in scoring, rebounds and blocks, averaging 13 points and eight rebounds per game.

“Offensively, she’s still a work in progress,” Marquardt said. “She’s improved a lot and will improve still. Defensively is where she’s a difference maker.”

The Titans are the second seed in the Region 5B tournament and will have a rematch with the No. 7 Bon Homme Cavaliers in the first round. First-round action kicks off today as these two teams play in the second game of a doubleheader at 8 p.m. in Plankinton.

With a win, MVP will advance to the semifinals and play No. 3 Tri-Valley or No. 6 Parkston Thursday. With a loss, the Titans will end their season.
