Area high school basketball roundup: MVP earns 11th win of season

PLATTE — Megan Bultsma scored 13 points and nine rebounds for Mount Vernon/Plankinton as the Titans defeated Platte 47-34 in a high school girls’ basketball game Friday.

The Titans shot 33 percent from the field and 33 percent from the free-throw line.

Heidi Ringling and Alexis Peterson scored nine points each for the Platte-Geddes Black Panthers. Peterson recorded 10 of the Panthers 26 rebounds. The Panthers shot 37 percent from the field and 85 percent from the line and committed 14 turnovers.

MVP (11-4) travels to Dell Rapids on Tuesday, while Platte-Geddes (6-10) plays at Miller Saturday.

Parkston 46, Gregory 34

PARKSTON — Halli Heisinger had 16 points and seven rebounds as the Parkston girls’ basketball team defeated Gregory 46-34 Friday.

Sam Herrold and Justene Alley each added nine points for the Trojans, who were 16-of-45 from the field and 9-of-19 from the line. Herrold also brought down seven rebounds. Parkston recorded 31 team rebounds and nine turnovers.

Lauren Svatos scored a team-high eight points and Briana Leber added 11 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Courtney Opbroek tallied five rebounds for the Gorillas, who were 13-of-44 from the field and 2-of-6 from the line. Gregory had 25 rebounds and 13 turnovers.

Parkston (5-10) plays at Scotland Tuesday, while Gregory (2-14) hosts White River Tuesday.

Ethan 56, Kimball/White Lake 38

ETHAN — The Ethan girls’ basketball team earned its 13th win of the season Friday after beating Kimball/White Lake 56-38.

Ellie Hohn had a team-high 16 points and four steals, Darbi Gustafson scored 15, Rachel Hawkins added 12 points and Kacey Bartscher recorded 10 for Ethan. Gustafson brought down 11 rebounds for a double-double and Hawkins added eight assists. Ethan was 18-of-39 from the field, 18-of-22 from the free-throw line and had 27 team rebounds.

Jazmyn Hinker scored a team-best 11 points, while Ivy Haines recorded five rebounds. The WiLdKats had 13 team rebounds and were 14-of-38 from the field and 6-of-8 from the line.

Ethan (13-4) won the JV game 34-29 and plays at Marion Tuesday, while Kimball/White Lake (10-6) hosts Lyman Monday in Kimball.

Winner 70, Ainsworth (Neb.) 54

WINNER — Four players scored in double digits for Winner in a 70-54 win over Aimsworth (Neb.) Friday in a high school girls’ basketball game.

Leading scorers for Winner were Tawny Sherman with 15, Kelsey Bertram with 13, Sara Husher with 12 and Katie Mathis with 11. Cassidy Hanson pulled in 10 rebounds for the Warriors.

The Warriors shot 45 percent from the field and 67 percent from the free-throw line. Winner had seven turnovers and 18 total fouls.

Ellie Carr had 17 points and six rebounds for Ainsworth, which shot 35 percent from the field, 63 percent from the line and 14 turnovers.

Winner (14-1) will play Cheyenne Eagle Butte on Saturday.

Bon Homme 66, Avon 40

AVON — Scott Van Winkle scored 13 points and added 10 rebounds for a double-double as Bon Homme defeated Avon 66-40 Friday in high school boys’ basketball action.

Logan Mudder scored a game-high 27 points and eight rebounds and Caleb VanGerpen added seven points for the Pirates, who were 7-of-24 from the line.

Scott Wieseler had a team-best 23 points and The Cavaliers were 14-of-22 from the line and won the JV game.

Bon Homme (10-5) plays Viborg-Hurley today in Viborg, while Avon (5-9) hosts Viborg-Hurley Tuesday.

Freeman 80, Howard 21

FREEMAN — Brennan Schmidt scored 18 points as Freeman defeated Howard 80-21 in a high school boys’ basketball game Friday.

Nick Helderbrand added 13 points for the Flyers, who shot 52 percent from the field. Freeman made 8 for 8 free throws. Schmidt recorded 10 rebounds of the team’s 45 total. Chris Butkus recorded nine of the team’s rebounds with Avery Sage adding five assists. The Flyers committed 12 turnovers compared to 17 for the Tigers.

Logan Hattervig recorded six points for the Tigers. David Weidler added five rebounds and David Clarey recorded four. The Tigers were 22 percent from the field and 38 percent from the free throw line.

Freeman (8-5) hosts Hanson Monday, while Howard (0-14) plays in the Cornbelt Classic at Freeman Saturday.

Ethan 77, Kimball/White Lake 40

ETHAN — Four players scored in double digits for Ethan in a 77-40 win over Kimball/White Lake Friday in a high school boys’ basketball game.

Camden Myers led the Rustlers with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Jace Conner scored 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Blake Bartscher added 18 points and 10 assists and Hanner Tilberg posted 10 points.

The Rustlers shot 31-of-50 from the field and 12 of 18 free throws. Ethan had nine turnovers, 38 total rebounds and shot 24 percent from the field.

Eathen Gaulke recorded 13 points and five rebounds for the WiLdKats. Brandon Overweg pulled in six rebounds.

The WiLdKats shot 12-of-40 from the field, 10-of-18 from the free-throw line and 2-of-13 from the three-point line. Kimball/White Lake, which won the JV game 30-27, had a total of 13 turnovers and 22 team rebounds.

Ethan (13-3) travels to Marion Tuesday, while Kimball/White Lake (2-13) hosts Lyman Monday.

PARKSTON — Jalen Hurley scored 19 points in a 49-42 win over the Gregory Gorillas Friday.

Spencer Lucas added 10 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double, Dillan Thuringer pulled in six rebounds and Ty Kinneberg had three steals and four assists. The Trojans shot 42 percent from the field and 68 percent from the line.

Gavin Thomas was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Gregory Gorillas with 12 points and eight of the 23 total rebounds. Andrew Taggart scored 10 points. Mason Juracek pulled in five rebounds. Sean Kafka had four rebounds, three steals and three assists. The Gorillas shot 32 percent from the field and 52 percent from the line.

Parkston (11-4) travels to Scotland on Tuesday and Gregory (12-3) hosts Santee on Tuesday.

Garretson 46, McCook Central/Montrose 36

GARRETSON — Conner Blosmo scored 17 points in Garretson’s 46-36 win over McCook Central/Montrose Friday in high school boys’ basketball action.

Austin Matthiesen made 13 points and eight rebounds of Garretson’s 30 total rebounds.

McCook Central/Montrose leading scorer was Will Gottlob with 17 points and nine rebounds. Tyler Cleveland scored 10 points and the Fighting Cougars had a team total of 31 rebounds and 16 turnovers.

Garretson won the JV game with a score of 49-40.

Garretson travels to Howard on Friday and McCook Central/Montrose (6-8) hosts Wagner Saturday.
