PARKSTON — Senior forward Andrew Ulvestad scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and senior forward Nathan Wedel added 22 points and six assists to lead top-ranked James Valley Christian to a 79-63 win over Hanson Monday at the Parkston Classic.

“They are both dominant inside,” JVC coach Darwin Hofer said of his two seniors. “But it’s not only inside but outside as well, and they both can run the floor well, which helps our guard.”

The Vikings led 19-13 at the start of the second quarter and went on a 15-3 run to take a commanding 41-27 lead going into halftime.

The second half began with the Beavers, who are receiving votes, slowly cutting into the Viking advantage, closing to within five at 47-42 with 2:47 left in the third quarter.

“We had a lot of turnovers in that second quarter and that was huge,” said Hanson coach Josh Oltmanns. “We did cut it to five but it was back to 15 in the blink of an eye.”

Over the final minutes of the third quarter, the Vikings went on a 14-4 run capped by a half-court shot at the buzzer by senior guard Cole Glanzer to give JVC a 61-46 lead going into the final stanza.

Hanson could only get to within 14 points the rest of the way.

“The strength of our game is to apply pressure and to get up and down the floor,” Hofer said. “If you’re not playing hard, then we’ll put in someone who will, and that has really helped to motivate these boys.”

The Vikings (3-0) were also led by Glanzer with 11 points and sophomore guard Tim Wager with five assists.

Oltmanns said his team talked about the strength and talent of the Vikings before the game.

“They’re fundamentally sound and they don’t make mistakes and they didn’t, but we did,” Oltmanns said. “The good thing is I don’t think we were that far off at times. Defensively, we have to get better.”

Junior guard Jordan Marquardt and junior center Taylor Nichols led the Beavers (5-1) with 17 points apiece. Senior forward Jacob Paradeis followed with 13 points and junior guard Sam Vander Stouwe added 10 points.

Hanson plays Lake Preston Friday, while JVC travels to Ethan Friday.
