Area high school basketball roundup: Spartan girls fall to undefeated Pirates

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — The Highmore-Harrold girls’ basketball team remains undefeated with a 56-38 win over Wessington Springs Friday.

Tierny Hamlin had 12 points, while Tyann Hamlin and Sydney Cowan added 10 points apiece in the win. The Pirates were 20-of-58 from the field and 6-of-12 from the line and tallied 39 team rebounds and 13 turnovers.

Devin Tebay scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double in the loss. Sheyanne Brodkorb had eight points for the Spartans, who were 12-of-51 from the field and 9-of-14 from the line and recorded 23 rebounds and 16 turnovers.

Wessington Springs (0-5) plays Corsica/Stickney Friday in Corsica, while Highmore-Harrold (6-0) won the JV game 34-16 and plays Corsica/Stickney in the Parkston Classic today.

Irene-Wakonda 57, Bon Homme 49

TYNDALL — The Irene-Wakonda girls’ basketball team scored 31 second-half points en route to defeating Bon Homme 57-49 Friday.

Makayla Mohr scored a game-high 22 points, while Taylor Lee had 11 points in the win.

Bon Homme was led by Kelsey Sutera with 19 points and eight rebounds. Emily Pechous added 12 points, six rebounds and four steals for the Cavaliers, who were 11-of-50 from the field, had 30 rebounds and committed 18 turnovers.

Bon Homme (2-3) won the JV game 40-10 and plays at Winner Friday.

Irene-Wakonda 65

TYNDALL — Scott Van Winkle scored a school-record 41 points in Bon Homme’s 92-65 win over Irene-Wakonda Friday in high school boys’ basketball action.

Van Winkle also brought down six rebounds in the win. Scott Wieseler had 18 points and Jon Barrett added four assists for the Cavaliers, who were 18-of-33 from the line and committed 17 turnovers.

There were 57 total fouls and 69 free throws taken in the game.

Gabe King had 19 points and seven rebounds for Irene-Wakonda, which had 20 turnovers. Kevin Hinseth had 10 points in the loss.

Bon Homme (2-1) plays at Winner Thursday.

Parkston 60, Avon 22

AVON — The Parkston boys’ basketball team beat Avon 60-22 Friday in a Little Missouri Valley Conference contest.

Wes Genant led the way for Parskton with 14 points. Zac Scott and Dylan Thuringer each added eight points for the Trojans.

Thuringer also tallied 11 rebounds, one less than Spencer Lucas, who had a game-high 12 rebounds.

Parkston was 20-of-57 from the field and 14-of-19 from the free-throw line.

Avon was led by Logan Mudder, who recorded 16 points and eight rebounds.

Devin Tolsma added four steals for the Pirates.

Parkston (3-0) plays Dakota Valley at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Parkston Classic in Parkston, while Avon (0-3) hosts Alcester-Hudson Friday in Avon.
