Area high school volleyball 10/26/13: Fighting Cougars fall in five to Marion

MONTROSE — Erica Schoenwald had 14 kills, 12 blocks and 17 digs to help the Marion volleyball team beat McCook Central/Montrose in five sets Friday.

Set scores were 20-25, 25-13, 9-25, 25-21, 15-5.

Devin Nelson chipped in with 24 digs and nine kills, while Kaitlyn Engbrecht had 15 assists and 16 digs for Marion. Renae Kayser added seven kills, 13 assists and 11 digs.

The Fighting Cougars were led by C.J. Ristesund, who tallied 17 kills and nine digs. Laura Klaudt added 30 assists, 15 digs and two aces.

Marion (14-9) hosts Freeman Monday in Marion, while MCM (10-13) plays Hanson Monday in Alexandria.

Scotland 3, Irene-Wakonda 2

SCOTLAND — Carley Skorepa tallied 17 kills, 14 digs and four aces to help Scotland beat Irene-Wakonda in five sets Friday.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-18, 16-25, 14-25, 15-8.

Jessica Thum chipped in with nine kills, 11 digs and four aces, while Amber Alvey recorded three kills, 30 assists and nine digs in the win.

Scotland (8-13) plays Parkston at the SESD Conference tournament today in Parkston.

Avon 3, Menno 1

MENNO — The Avon Pirates beat Menno in four sets Friday in high school volleyball action.

Set scores were 25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20.

Ariana Oorlog led the way for Avon with 12 kills, 15 digs and two aces. Amanda Reiff added six kills, 15 digs and two aces.

Menno was led by Christina Herrboldt with eight kills, 15 digs and three aces. Madison Huber added three kills, 10 assists, nine digs and two aces. Abby Herrboldt had seven kills, two assists, 13 digs and one ace.

Menno (3-18) plays at Scotland Monday. Avon (12-11) won the JV match and plays Gayville-Volin Monday in Gayville.

Mitchell Christian 3, Andes Central 1

LAKE ANDES — The Mitchell Christian Golden Eagles beat Andes Central in four sets Friday.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-20, 22-25, 25-16.

Emily Reynen and Cassidy Graham led the way for the MCS. Reynen recorded 11 kills, four blocks, eight digs and one ace, while Graham had nine kills, three blocks, 11 digs and two aces.

Andes Central was led by Payton and Dennisha Johanneson. Payton Johanneson had 12 kills, 12 digs and three blocks, while Dennisha Johanneson had seven kills, three blocks, nine digs and four aces.

MCS (10-10) hosts Corsica/Stickney Monday, while the Eagles (12-12) play at Gregory Monday.

Howard 3, Garretson 2

HOWARD — The Howard Tigers beat Garretson in five sets Friday.

Set scores were 10-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 18-16.

Haylee DeJong had six kills and three aces to lead the way for Howard. Jessica Cavigielli chipped in with five kill. Sam Hughes added 13 digs, while Taylor Noid had four kills.

Howard (3-16) plays at Parker Monday.

Bon Homme 3, Viborg-Hurley 2

HURLEY — Caitlin McLouth recorded 18 kills and four assists to help Bon Homme beat Viborg-Hurley in five sets Friday.

Set scores were 20-25, 25-13, 25-22, 15-25, 15-13.

Sierra Mesman had eight kills, while Liz Kubal tallied seven kills for the Cavaliers. Vanessa Navratil chipped in with 34 digs, while Morgan Rothschadl had 16 digs and Kelsey Sutera tallied 15 digs. Alie Adams added 24 assists and 14 digs.

BH (17-6) plays at the SESD Conference tournament today in Parkston. VH (14-11) plays Alcester Hudson Monday in Alcester.

Miller 3, Wessington Springs 1

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — The Wessington Springs Spartans fell to Miller in four sets Friday.

Set scores were 25-15, 13-25, 25-16, 25-18.

Wessington Springs was led by Sheyanne Brodkorb, who recorded eight kills, five aces and 17 digs. Lexi Olinger had 10 assists, while Shyanne Kopfman had seven kills, Devin Tebay had three blocks and Monica Jones had 19 digs.

The Spartans (8-16) play Hitchcock-Tulare Monday in Tulare.

Kimball/White Lake 3, Colome 0

COLOME — The Kimball/White Lake volleyball team beat Colome 25-13, 25-9, 25-15 Friday.

Jazmyn Hinker had 11 kills, 11 digs and five aces and Ivy Haines recorded 11 kills, two blocks and one ace in the win.

No stats were reported for Colome despite attempts to reach coaches.

KWL (15-7) hosts Dakota Christian Monday in White Lake. Colome ends the regular season 5-18.

Bridgewater-Emery 3, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 2

EMERY — Justine Dye had 14 kills, 10 digs and two blocks to help the Bridgewater-Emery volleyball team beat Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 25-20, 17-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-8 Friday.

Tiana Kayser chipped in with 10 kills, while Chesney Arend had 23 digs and Brenda Weber added 12 digs and two aces in the win.

SCW was led by Marissa Weber with 21 kills, 14 digs, two blocks and two aces. Myah Selland added 13 kills, 10 digs, three blocks and one ace.

SCW (15-9) hosts Mount Vernon/Plankinton Monday in Woonsocket, while the Huskies end the regular season 15-9.
