Area high school volleyball 10/22/13: Avon earns four-set win

AVON — Ariana Oorlog had 10 kills and 16 digs for a double-double in Avon’s four-set win over Ethan Monday in a high school volleyball match.

Set scores were 23-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-20.

Oorlog added two blocks and three serves, while Hanna Powers recorded 17 assists and five digs. Amanda Reiff added 12 digs, two kills and two aces for Avon.

Ethan was led by Darbi Gustafson, who recorded a match-high 19 kills and added 14 digs, two blocks and two aces. Holley Lindeman tallied 22 assists, three kills and eight digs, and Rachel Hawkins totaled 17 digs.

Avon (11-10) won the C match and hosts Corsica/Stickney today, while Ethan (17-6) won the JV match hosts Tripp-Delmont/Armour Monday.

Hanson 3, Scotland 0

SCOTLAND — The Hanson Beavers continued their winning streak with a three-set victory over Scotland Monday.

Set scores were 25-12, 25-19, 25-16. Hanson has won 16 consecutive matches.

Kynedi Cheeseman had a team-high 10 kills and added seven digs and three aces for Hanson. Emily Brown tallied 17 assists, while Leah Marsh had 18 digs.

Scotland was led by Carley Skorepa with nine kills, four digs and one block. Amber Alvery tallied 14 assists and two aces, while Jessica Thum recorded a team-high seven digs.

The Beavers (20-1) won the JV match and play at Freeman today, while Scotland (7-13) hosts Irene-Wakonda Friday.

Centerville 3, Menno 0

MENNO — Menno suffered a 25-23, 25-17, 25-14 loss to Centerville Monday in high school volleyball action.

The Wolvers were led by Christina Herrboldt with 10 digs, two kills, two blocks and an ace. Emily Massey and Madison Huber each had eight digs, while Huber added six assists and two aces.

Centerville’s Gabrielle Larson led all players with 20 assists.

Menno (3-19) plays at Canistota today.

Wolsey-Wessington 3, Dakota Christian 1

WOLSEY — The Wolsey-Wessington volleyball team defeated Dakota Christian 25-19, 25-22, 19-25, 25-19 Monday.

Dakota Christian was led by Abbi BaanHofman with 19 kills, seven digs and 19 blocks. Kennedy Muckey had 18 kills and four aces.

Wolsey-Wessington’s Meagan Eggleston and Abbey Tschetter each had 10 kills.

Wolsey-Wessington (12-8) plays Sunshine Bible Academy today, while the Cadets (3-21) play Kimball/White Lake Monday in White Lake.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton 3, Parkston 2

MOUNT VERNON — Halley Haak recorded a match-high 20 digs in Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s 21-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, 15-11 win over Parkston Monday.

Makaela Karst tallied three aces and 12 kills in the win, while Jasmin Wait had 12 kills. Mikayla Weiss recorded a match-high 39 assists and Megan Bultsma had two blocks.

Parkston’s Laura Weiss had 17 kills, two aces and six blocks, while Halli Heisinger totaled eight kills. Whitney Weber added 30 assists and Abbie Mechtenberg had 13 digs.

Parkston (13-9) plays Bon Homme today, while the Titans (18-2) play at the SESD tournament Saturday in Parkston.

Platte-Geddes 3, Tripp-Delmont/Armour 1

PLATTE — Brianna Erickson tallied 19 digs and three aces in Platte-Geddes’ 25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 25-19 victory over Tripp-Delmont/Armour Monday in high school volleyball action.

Cassidy Plooster had five aces, two blocks and 11 assists, Josie DeGroot added three aces, 17 kills, two blocks and Shelby Johnson tallied 14 digs. Jermaine Nelson recorded nine kills and three blocks, while Madi Whalen added five kills, 10 assists and 14 digs.

TDA’s Becca Brown recorded six kills, 15 digs and four blocks in the loss, while Jessica Sandau added 10 kills. Payton Schafers and Hannah Just each had 10 digs and Just added nine assists.

Platte-Geddes (10-10) plays Kimball/White Lake today in Platte, while the Nighthawks (3-19) play Ethan Monday.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 3, Corsica/Stickney 1

FORESTBURG — Marissa Weber totaled a match-high 14 kills and 12 aces for a double-double to lead Sanborn Central/Woonsocket past Corsica/Stickney 3-1 Monday in high school volleyball action.

Set scores were 23-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-19.

Weber added nine blocks and eight digs, while Tayla Weber added 13 assists for the Blackhawks.

Corsica/Stickney’s Rachel Milligan had 24 assists and 12 digs for a double-double, Brianna Kuyper added 21 digs and four aces and Hope Menning tallied eight kills.

The Blackhawks (15-7) play Hitchcock-Tulare today in Tulare, while the Jaguars (6-16) play at Avon today.

Colome 3, St. Francis Indian 2

ST. FRANCIS — Mariah Kinzer had 13 kills and 15 digs for a double-double to lead the Colome volleyball team to a five-set victory over St. Francis Indian Monday.

Set scores were 17-25, 21-25, 25-15, 25-21, 16-14.

Rebecca Moorhead added 12 kills, four blocks and eight aces for Colome. Rylee Rutton added 18 digs, Jessie Pravecek had 15 digs and Taylor Hrabanek added 14 digs and four aces in the win.

Colome (5-17) hosts Kimball/White Lake Friday.

Chamberlain 3, Crow Creek 2

STEPHAN — The Chamberlain volleyball team edged Crow Creek in five sets Monday in high school volleyball action.

Set scores 27-25, 23-25, 25-9, 21-25, 15-13.

Kylie Bertram recorded nine kills and Abbey Handel had eight kills, nine aces and 12 assists for the Cubs. Kennedy Wagner totaled 37 digs and 13 assists for a double-double, while Sarah Knust added five aces.

Chamberlain (5-15) plays at White River today.

Alcester-Hudson 3, Marion 0

ALCESTER — Alcester-Hudson topped Marion 25-18, 25-14, 25-19 Monday in a high school volleyball match.

Erica Schoenwald had 11 kills and seven blocks for Marion.

The Bears (13-9) play McCook Central/Montrose Friday in Montrose.
