'Jason Mitchell Outdoors' TV show to air segment filmed near Kimball
KIMBALL -- The wide-open fields and abundant pheasant population near Kimball will be featured next month on one of the Midwest's most well-known outdoor television shows.
Jason Mitchell, host of "Jason Mitchell Outdoors," recently filmed a segment of his television show near Kimball. Mitchell said the segment will be broadcast near the end of March.
"It's beautiful country," Mitchell said.
While Mitchell has filmed segments of his show in South Dakota before, this was his first time filming in this area.
He estimated he films about six segments in South Dakota each season.
Mitchell was impressed with the number of pheasants he saw in the one day he spent filming near Kimball.
"That's the most pheasants I've seen in a while," he said. "There is way more pheasants than you could shoot in a day. It's still some of the best hunting you're going to find."
The segment of "Jason Mitchell Outdoors" filmed near Kimball will focus on dog care and training.
The people featured in the segment are Brad Donald, of Kimball, who works for the Wings of Thunder hunting lodge, and Dan Patee, of the North Sioux City-based high-energy pet food company Country Vet Pet Foods.
"The people that we shot with did an excellent job," Mitchell said. "We would definitely like to come back."
Mitchell replaced Tony Dean as host of the show more than four years ago after Dean retired.
Dean died in December 2008 due to complications after an appendectomy.
The show, originally known as "Tony Dean Outdoors," began in 1985. "(Dean) really was a mentor to me," Mitchell said.
Mitchell, who lives in Devil's Lake, N.D., worked as guide in Devil's Lake and took out Dean many times before they began working together on the television show.
"Television has been fun just because I've been able to get out and meet a lot of people," he said. "I've got to pinch myself when I go in to work, that's for sure."
"Jason Mitchell Outdoors" is shown on Fox Sports North and Fox Sports Midwest in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Kansas, Missouri, Indiana and Illinois.
The show airs on Sundays at 9 a.m.
