Good competition and practice is what the Mitchell girls golf team was hoping to get out of Friday’s Mitchell Invitational.

The Kernels got both, taking on 16 teams from around the state and getting quality golf in on a sunny day in April at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.

“We were happy with the girls’ performances,” said MHS golf coach Rob Marchand, whose team finished 10th. “It was a beautiful day for golf and we were able to beat some really good teams. I figured we would be anywhere from eighth to tenth, so I am happy with how our day went.”

The Kernels finished with a score of 370. Pierre claimed the team title with a 330, while Sioux Falls O’Gorman took second with a 333 and Rapid City Stevens took third with a 337. Parkston’s Sydney Bormann won the event with a 69.

Marchand is hopeful that this tournament will give his team some confidence heading into the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet May 9 in Pierre.

“Our tournament is just as big as the state tournament,” Marchand said. “It is one of the biggest tournaments that is hosted in the state every year. I know the teams really enjoy coming here. Lakeview is a good course to play and it is similar to the one we will play on at Pierre for ESD, so it was good preparation.”

Leading the way for the Kernels was Macy Miller, who carded an 86 for 18th place. Taylor Volesky shot a 91 to tie for 31st, Madison VanWalleghen had a 95, Allison Miller shot a 98, Blair Overweg scored a 104 and Allysa Sorenson had a 105.

Ninety-five golfers participated in the event Friday and 16 of the 17 teams competing were from Class AA. But the winner of the individual title was from the lone Class A team competing Friday. Parkston’s Bormann carded a 69 to help the Trojans finish fourth. Parkston shot a 341 with the help of Bormann, who dipped into the 60s for the first time this season. Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Abbie Grevlos finished second, while Pierre’s Karissa Guthrie took third.

“I was feeling really good about my game and I think it all came together,” said Bormann, who won by six strokes. “But no matter how well you think you are playing, there are a few shots that you feel like you left out there.”

Parkston won the Mitchell Invitational last year with four golfers finish in the top 10. This year, Bormann and Sydney Weber were the lone golfers to crack the top 10 for the Trojans. Weber shot a 79 to tie for fifth place, while Jayden Bormann shot a 92 to tie for 39th. Sierra Stands carded a 101, Tiana Kruse shot a 109 and Jadee Mattheis had a 114 for the Trojans.

Mitchell’s next action is the Sioux Falls Washington Invitational Monday in Sioux Falls. Parkston heads to the Charger Invite Wednesday in Sioux Falls.
