MTI’s Thyberg wins steer wrestling event at rodeo

BROOKINGS — Mitchell Technical Institute’s Evan Thyberg, a Hartford native, won steer wrestling at the 60th Annual Jackrabbit Stampede over the weekend at the Swiftel Center in Brookings.

Blake Boysen, a Sioux Falls native, split fourth and fifth in steer wrestling, while Jim O’Leary, a Timberlake native, took second overall in saddle bronc. Harrold native Kyle Hapney was fifth in saddle bronc.

Tanner Cross, a Woonsocket native, and Miles Kreeger, a Wagner native, qualified for the finals but did not place overall in the rodeo. The MTI men’s team finished fourth overall.

MTI is back in action April 18-19 in Lincoln, Neb.

Kernel girls golf finishes 10th at Pierre Invite

PIERRE — The Mitchell Kernel girls golf team shot 374 to finish 10th at the Pierre Invite Tuesday.

Macy Miller had the highest finish for Mitchell after placing 30th with an 89. Allison Miller took 37th after shooting a 93, while Kylie Barrington and Madison VanWalleghen finished 43rd and 44th, respectively, after they each shot 96. Trisha Flemmer shot a 105 to finish 60th and Allysa Sorenson shot a 107 for 61st.

Pierre’s Katie Bartlett took home the individual title after shooting a 76, beating Yankton’s Beck Frick and Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s Elle Carlson, who both shot 77.

Sioux Falls O’Gorman won the team title (318), followed by Pierre and Rapid City Stevens tying in second with 335s.

DWU softball team sweeps Lancers

YANKTON — Jill Dickson pitched 11 2/3 innings to help the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team sweep Mount Marty 8-0, 10-1 Tuesday.

Dickson threw 6 2/3 no hit innings in the opening game. She struck out eight and walked two batters. The DWU senior came back in the second game and pitched five innings, allowing one earned run on three hits, while striking out one.

Third baseman Vanessa Mendez had four hits and four RBIs on the day to lead the Tigers (12-10, 5-5). Center fielder Danielle Klassen was 3-for-8 with two RBIs, second baseman Katie Anderus was 3-for-6 with two RBIs and shortstop Lindy Snook was 3-for-6 with one RBI.

DWU plays Presentation College at 3 p.m. Thursday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
