Kernel girls win 43rd straight home game

With its win over Pierre Thursday, the Mitchell Kernel girls’ basketball team has set a new standard for home dominance.

The win in the final game for the Kernels at the Corn Palace this season extended the team’s home win streak to 43 games. This is an unofficial Mitchell High School girls’ basketball record as details are not kept by the school or the state on this type of streak.

Former Kernel coach Gary Munsen said his girls’ basketball teams won 39 straight from 1992-94 and through research into The Daily Republic archives, it was determined that the Kernels lost their fourth home game of the 1995 season to end the run at 42 games.

Not all home games for the Kernels were not played at the Corn Palace from 1992-95, as the girls’ team hosted the majority of its contests at the high school.

Current Mitchell coach Wes Morgan has said on numerous occasions that the home win streak is just another number, but stated“The Corn Palace has been good to us over the last few years.”

Mitchell was 12-0 at the Corn Palace this season and with the win over the Governors Thursday the Kernels earned a spot in the Class AA state tournament, which begins Thursday at Frost Arena in Brookings, where the team captured its most recent state title in 2012.
