The Mitchell girls’ basketball team played 20 regular season games and senior guard Macy Miller led the score sheet each time.

But Monday, forward Taylor Volesky scored a career-high 29 points as the No. 1 Kernels topped Huron 64-43 in the first round of the District 3AA tournament at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

Miller finished with 24 points, marking the first time this season she did not lead the Kernels in scoring.

“Down the stretch I got into a pretty good rhythm,” Volesky said. “Being 19-1 coming in gives you a lot of confidence.”

It was another record-breaking night for Miller, who is signed to play at South Dakota State University in the fall. She broke the Mitchell career scoring record, topping the mark of 1,760 set last year by current SDSU freshman and former Mitchell star Kerri Young. Miller now sits at 1,777 points in her career, the most by any Kernel, boy or girl, in the school’s history. She also tied the Class AA single-season scoring record of 624 points and is now tied with Kris Holwerda, of Brookings, who set the mark in 1981.

Mitchell (20-1) started sluggish in the opening moments, as Huron kept the game tight. Tied at 11 in the first quarter, The Kernels went on a 15-0 run to build a lead that was challenged by the Tigers the rest of the way.

Miller and Volesky combined to score 33 of the Kernels’ 38 first-half points, as Mitchell led by 18 at the break. After a strong start to the second half by Volesky, Mitchell coach Wes Morgan was able to get some rest for his starters and valuable minutes for his role players.

Volesky scored 15 points in the second half and made three 3-pointers in Mitchell’s 42nd consecutive win at the Corn Palace. The junior added a team-high eight rebounds, two steals and two assists.

“Taylor is starting to figure out her game,” Morgan said. “She is becoming consistent.”

Miller was held to just five second-half points and exited the game early in the fourth after hitting her knee on the stands going after a loose ball. She did not sustain a serious injury and should be ready to go when for the second round of districts Thursday. Miller added five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and six steals. Senior Emma Schmidt and senior Cassidy Musick each added four points for the Kernels, who shot 22-of-44 from the field and 15-of-22 from the free-throw line.

Huron (4-17) was led by Taya Butterfield with 11 points, while Sarah Carr added nine points and eight rebounds. The Tigers outrebounded Mitchell 31-25, while shooting 18-of-50 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.

“We have put ourselves in a win or go home situation,” Huron coach Allen Steffen said. “There are no easy places to play in Class AA.”

Mitchell plays Pierre, which beat Aberdeen Central Monday in the other District 3AA game, for a spot in the Class AA state tournament at 8 p.m.Thursday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. Huron plays an elimination game against Aberdeen Central Thursday in Aberdeen.
