The set scores were 18-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-17, 15-12.

The Kernels (7-9) fell in five sets to Rapid City Central Friday.

“We definitely went out there to play volleyball, playing two five-set matches in less than 24 hours,” Thill said. “We compete and never give up. My team will give their all on every point and that keeps you in matches.”

Against the Raiders, Mitchell failed to close out the match after taking a 2-1 lead into the fourth set.

The Kernels have now played seven five-set matches this season, winning two.

Taylin Alm, who has committed to play at Division I Pepperdine University next year, played one of her best matches of the season according to Mitchell coach Deb Thill.

Alm finished with 30 kills, 15 digs and four aces one night after eclipsing the 1,000 kill mark against Rapid City Central.

The Kernels had a collective defensive effort against RC Stevens. Alm, Taylor Sebert, Trisha Flemmer and Sidney Neugebauer each finished with double-digit digs for Mitchell.

Emma Schmidt had an all-around solid performance, racking up 36 assists, seven kills, four aces and eight digs.

“We challenged our team after Friday night to get better and they responded,” Thill said.

The Kernels have four regular season matches left prior to the start of the state playoffs and strong play will be key for Mitchell’s playoff seeding.

“We are still fighting with Pierre for that spot in the districts and I expect great effort from our kids as we step back into conference play,” Thill said.

The Kernels are back on the road tonight to play Brandon Valley at 7 p.m. in Brandon. Mitchell fell to Brandon Valley in five sets on Sept. 21 in Mitchell.
