Mitchell girls' soccer team beats Sioux Falls Christian for first win

The Mitchell High School girls’ soccer team avenged an early-season tie with a 4-0 win Saturday over Sioux Falls Christian at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex.

The Kernels (1-4-1) battled the afternoon heat to pick up their first victory of the season against a Charger squad that played Mitchell to a 0-0 decision in the season opener.

“The biggest difference (Saturday) was our effort and collective defense,” Mitchell head coach Kayla Braffet said. “Putting goals in the back of the net was huge because we have been struggling to do that all season.”

Emily Paulson netted two goals for the Kernels, including the only tally of the first half. Paulson was a force in the middle all game, controlling the play and setting up her teammates for quality scoring opportunities.

“(Paulson) really helps switch the field and provides control in the center,” Braffet said. “It was nice that she was able to finally get a goal to show her effort.”

The Kernels also saw second-half goals from Bailey Hohn and Taina Youngstrom to put the game away late.

In net, sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Pistulka held off the Sioux Falls Christian (0-4-1) attack for the shutout.

Next, Mitchell travels to Harrisburg (2-3) to take on the Tigers at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
