Likely candidates mum on Kernels' coaching job

With Monday's deadline looming to apply for the Mitchell High School boys' basketball coaching position, no candidate has publicly acknowledged an interest in the job.

Former Kernels coach Gary Munsen recommended assistant coach Craig Mock, but Mock has announced he will not pursue the position.

Many area coaches have ties to Mitchell or the team and have had their names thrown around as possible candidates.

The head coach for the Kernel girls' team, Wes Morgan, said he plans to keep his position and will not move over to the boys' team.

Mitchell High School graduate and current Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball coach Jason Christensen said he is not applying for the position and will continue to coach the Tigers.

Sturgis head coach Orion Thompson, who runs the Hansen-Anderson basketball camps in Mitchell every year, said he has not considered the position.

"It's not something I've explored, and I haven't been contacted," Thompson said.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket girls' basketball coach Tim McCain, who lives in Mitchell and previously coached the Kernel girls' team, said he did not apply for the position. McCain led the Blackhawks to the Class B girls' state tournament this past season.

Former Mitchell Christian boys' basketball head coach Tom Young, who retired from Mitchell Christian after the 2011 season, did not respond to The Daily Republic's efforts to contact him.

Young left his previous coaching job before his daughter, Jill, competed in her final season with the South Dakota State University women's basketball team this past season. He said then that he hoped to be able to enjoy watching her final season.

Young played for Munsen from 1972 to 1975. When he resigned from Mitchell Christian, The Daily Republic asked about his potential interest in the Mitchell High job.

"I haven't even thought about it, and at this time I don't plan on it," Young said at the time.

Huron boys' coach Tim Buddenhagen and Mount Vernon boys' coach Eric Denning declined to comment on the job opening.

Denning's Mount Vernon team is in a transition phase as the school is beginning a co-op with Plankinton for next season.

Mitchell Athletic Direc-tor Geoff Gross has said he will continue to take applications for the coaching position through Monday.
