Kernel girls use big second half for 48-27 win over Pierre

Mitchell's Berkley Rietveld (5) sends a pass to a teammate during an Eastern South Dakota Conference game against Pierre Tuesday at the Corn Palace.

The Mitchell High School girls' basketball team stayed undefeated at the Corn Palace this season as it defeated Pierre 48-27 Tuesday night in an Eastern South Dakota Conference game.

The Kernels, who have won eight home games, missed several open looks in the first half but still led 22-14 at the break, thanks in large part to Kerri Young's six steals in the first 16 minutes.

Despite the team recording 10 steals in the first half, Mitchell head coach Wes Morgan still decided to switch from a "run-and-jump" full-court pressure defense back to the 2-3 zone that the Kernels normally run.

"We were getting awful tired in the run-and-jump," said Morgan, whose team is 14-1 overall and 11-0 in ESD play. "When we went back into our zone, we didn't use as much energy. We were getting steals but some of those we weren't capitalizing."

The change in strategy clearly worked for Mitchell, as the Kernels started the third quarter with a 10-0 run that allowed a cushion that they wouldn't lose.

Offensively, the Kernels' coach didn't see any adjustments that needed to be made at half for the team to take control after the break.

"We were getting good looks at the basket and taking good shots, but they just weren't falling," he said. "You just have to keep doing it until they start falling."

The Kernels went into the fourth quarter with a 37-20 lead and started with another solid run, scoring the first seven points of the fourth quarter. Mitchell failed to reach the 50-point mark for only the third time this season, giving Pierre coach Lisa Bahe something to build from for her squad.

"To hold a team like Mitchell to 48 points, you're playing fairly good defense," Bahe said. "It's just that we've got to be able to score some points."

Kerri Young finished the night as the Kernels' leading scorer with 15 points to go along with her game-high seven steals. Young also led the team with six rebounds. Macy Miller added 10 points for Mitchell, which improved to 14-1.

The Kernels shot 21-of-53 from the field and 5-of-12 from the free-throw line after missing all five attempts in the first half.

Pierre dropped to 3-12 after shooting 12-of-36 from the field and did not attempt a free throw.

The Lady Governors' highest scorer on the night was Kristi Livermont with eight points, while Kaitlyn Severyn finished with a game-high nine rebounds.

The Mitchell girls' next contest will be Friday night when they travel to play Sturgis.
