The Mitchell Kernels fastpitch softball team split a doubleheader Sunday at Cadwell Park.

Mitchell lost to Madison 8-7 in six innings in its first game of the day, then beat Brookings 1-0 in seven innings in its second game.

In the win against Brookings, Courtney Moore drove in Andrea Sheppard-Kauwalu with the only run of the game with a groundout in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Sheppard-Kauwalu picked up the win in the circle by striking out four in two innings of relief. Krista Huber started for the Kernels and threw five innings. She allowed four hits, struck out four and walked six.

Mitchell had just two hits in the win, but both came on drag bunts by Sheppard-Kauwalu and Katie Lazenby prior to Moore's RBI groundout.

"We only had two hits and we played small ball," Mitchell coach Jim Misiaszek said. "We did play very well defensively, though. Much better in the second game than in the first."

Mitchell committed five errors in the loss to Madison. Sheppard Kauwalu allowed three hits in two innings of relief and was hit with the loss. Hallie Misiaszek started and gave up seven hits and three earned runs in four innings.

Lazenby went 1-for-3 with two runs, while Macie Harris and Huber each had two RBIs in the loss for the Kernels. Mitchell is 4-4 on the season and plays a doubleheader against Sioux Falls Washington started at 6 p.m. today at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls.

In junior varsity action, Mitchell Black and Mitchell Gold each went 2-0 on Sunday. Black swept a doubleheader from Madison with wins of 7-2 and 14-2 in nine innings. Gold swept Huron by scores of 10-1 and 16-6.
