Mitchell's Nelson commits to DWU

Mitchell High School standout quarterback Kiel Nelson announced his commitment to Dakota Wesleyan University via Twitter on Wednesday.

Nelson, an incoming senior, has been Mitchell's starting quarterback in each of the past two seasons, developing into one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the state.

As a junior in 2017, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound Nelson completed 33.8 percent of his passes for 719 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions. On the ground, he rushed 122 times for 676 yards and six touchdowns, including two games with at least 100 yards. His longest run of the season was 71 yards.

Nelson was an Class 11AA all-state selection in 2017 as a special teams player. He was the Kernels' primary punter with 647 punting yards on 24 punts.

He also led Mitchell to its first Class 11AA state championship in football in 2016 as a sophomore. The Kernels beat Harrisburg, 41-6. Nelson rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown in the championship game, while also adding another touchdown through the air.

Nelson's older brother, Kanin, is a reserve quarterback at South Dakota State and previously starred for the Kernels.

Dakota Wesleyan was 6-5 in 2017 but it marked DWU's seventh straight winning season.

Nelson and the Mitchell Kernels open their season at home on Aug. 25 against Watertown at Joe Quintal Field.
