Area athletes earn academic honor

Several area high school track and field athletes were given academic all-state honors, it was announced this week.

To be eligible for the award, an athlete must be a senior with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better and have participated in the sport for at least three years. The senior must be nominated by its head coach.

Berkley Rietveld and Megan Farnham earned the award from Mitchell High School.

Mitchell baseball to host Coca-Cola Pop Drive Monday

Mitchell baseball players will host a Coca-Cola Pop Drive Monday in Mitchell.

The players will be selling an assortment of Coke products around the community from 5:30 to 8 p.m. for a fundraiser.

Carp shoot to be held Sunday

The Stump Shooters Archery Club will be hosting its annual carp shoot Sunday at the club's outdoor range in Mitchell.

All participants can register and weigh-in at the range, which is located near the airport. Registration is from 7 to 8 a.m. and the fee is $25 per two-person team. A South Dakota fishing license is required for shooters 16 and older.

Kernels to host volleyball camps

The Mitchell High School volleyball team is hosting three Kernel camps this summer.

The first is the MHS volleyball camp for girls grades seven through 12 on July 8-9 at the high school. The cost for the camp is $50.

The second is the Kernel Klassic Team Camp of Champs, which is on July 10-11. Pre-registration is due June 25 and the cost is $25 per player.

The final camp is the Lil' Kernel Volleyball Camp for grades third through sixth. The camp is from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 6-7 at the high school. Cost per player is $30.

Registration open for triathlon

Racers can still sign up for the eighth annual DAKOTAMAN Triathlon, which is scheduled for 8 a.m. June 15 at Lake Alvin near Sioux Falls.

The spring triathlon consists of a 600-yard swim, 16-mile bike and 3.2-mile run. Racers can register online at or On-site registration is also available by 7 a.m. the day of the race.
