Catching up: Assmus earns league honors with pair of second-place finishes

Shelby Assmus, of Stickney, was named to the All-Summit League in the shot put and the hammer throw following her performance at the conference championships last weekend.

The senior finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 51.02 meters, just behind teammate Amy Paulzine. Assmus also took second in the shot put with a toss of 14.73 meters.

The Jackrabbits finished second as a team.

Frank, Doom compete at Summit League championships

The University of South Dakota track and field team competed at the Summit League Outdoor Championships over the weekend in Fargo, N.D., with the men tying for first and the women taking third.

Burke native Tyler Frank finished second in the men’s high jump for USD, clearing 6 feet, 9 inches. Frank was named to the All-Summit League team in the high jump.

Jilanne Doom, of Wagner, competed for the women’s team in the 10,000 meter run. She finished ninth with a time of 38 minutes, 28.39 seconds.

Augustana baseball falls despite Gau’s strong outing

Alexandria native Tyson Gau was outdueled in a NCAA national tournament game against Emporia State Saturday in Russellville, Ark., as the Vikings’ season came to a close.

Gau threw eight innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits, while striking out five in a 3-0 loss in an elimination game of the NCAA Division II national tournament. The senior held Emporia State scoreless through eight innings, before the Hornets broke through with three runs in the ninth inning for the win.

The Vikings finished the season with a 41-16 record.

OSU’s Way takes sixth at Big 12 meet

Mitchell native Caitlin Way placed sixth in the hammer throw for Oklahoma State University at the Big 12 Championships last weekend in Lubbock, Texas.

The senior finished her career with a season-best throw of 58.62 meters, giving Way a third straight All-Big 12 performance.

The Cowgirls finished seventh at the tournament with 54 points, with the University of Texas-Austin winning with 149 points.
